Blue Ribbon Blue Eyes?
An I the only one that noticed all the Blue Ribbons have blue eyes? Even Katie Holmes who doesn't have blue eyes, had blue eyes in this movie.

shareMaybe it was part of the treatment. Rae and Steve's brainwashing was interrupted, but maybe the drugs caused a change in eye color.
shareI just have this mixed feeling about the choice of blue symbolism in the first place, wondering if red would be better.
Their chipped eye glows red when they get excited, but they are supposed to be blue most of the time... guess it a defect. The whole "be blue" brainwashing thing seems pointless and unnecessary if they don't mean something else behind the choice of color.
I feel like they missed out on a message where red could have been a political point too, but they chose not to and used blue, which makes less sense in a political message. I mean the conspiracy plot is about trying to change free thinking kids to be good old fashioned white Americans who suppress who they really are until they snap. Brings up thoughts of closeted politicians engaging in foot play in public restrooms. It would have been so easy to make everything red and say something about the republican party.
Not that I am pro the democrat party, but it's so easy to make a generic message about young republicans being brainwashed into by snobby bullies of anyone who is different. Reminds me of the conservative notion of conversion therapy for gay people.
But I can see how blue could be a symbol for "blue bloods." As well as Pabst Blue Ribbon, haha. The choice beer of white trash, South Park tells me.

But I didn't notice Katie Holmes eyes being blue, but I sure noticed their outfits. Not sure how it was a good thing for all of them to be easily recognizable... except maybe the parents who recognize the blue jackets in the yogurt shop and wish their kids were that clean cut. Guess if you want to spark envy, you have to show people what they should be envious of. And red also has demonic connotations while blue should have a calming effect on people.
I did not notice that the kids had blue eyes, but I did notice they all had straight, severely cut hair. (the girls anyhow.)
I think you might be reading too much into it. They were the Blue Ribbons. Blue is the color of a first place ribbon - winners - the best.
