Hockey Error

Not sure if anyone caught this but I believe this is most definately an error on the part of the movie producers *unless I missed some explainin in the movie*

At the end of the movie when NY Rangers were leaving to head back and both Weeks and Banks were headed back with them to the AHL, they mention they are going to play for Binghampton...that wouldn't be correct.

Now, given this movie is from 1999 (myabe filmed 1998), the Rangers affliate AHL team was Hartford Wolf Pack - now given, they were previously know as the Binghampton Rangers until 1997 - when the Wolf Pack took over (one year before this movie - and unless this movie stated that it took place sometime before 1997, that's incorrect).

Binghampton has since returned (2002) to now be know as the Binghampton Senators (affliated with...the Ottawa Senators)

I don't mean to be picky, but I just find that when you want to portray a hockey movie, you cannot go and use a real NHL team, you have to make sure you correctly reference their AHL/OHL/UHL/ECHL team.

yep, noticed the same thing, but who knows, maybe it was written in 1997 or prior and they just never edited it?

reply

or maybe it's just a movie.

reply

i caught this one too.

Think of it as an alternate universe since none of the Ranger players were the real Rangers at the time. In this universe the Rangers AHL affiliate was in Binghamton.

Do you think he wants some cheese?

Notice another thing: Rangers captain, #11, jackson. thats just stupid, everyone knows even though messier was in vancouver at the time, the rangers held his jhersey. just something lazy producers didnt bother to look up.

reply

well Stevie Weeks was still in high school, so he could't be signed and would first have to enter his name into the NHL Draft.

Here's a great idea how about taking the movie for what it is and just not worry about it. A lot of people didn't even notice the mistake quite complaining and enjoy a good movie for once.

reply

Here's a better idea, don't come on to a board about the hockey specifics of a movie if you're not interested in hockey specifics. Nobody is dissing the movie just showing their hockey knowledge and being fans.

I loved this movie and don't care too much if they got the specifics right. It's more about the characters than hockey to me but I was interested enough to come here and read...

For 7 seasons the Binghamton Rangers were the AHL affiliate to the New York Rangers.

I guess the screenplay/script was written around the time of that affiliation.

reply

Does it say anywhere what year the movie was set? Even if the film was released in 1999, that doesn't mean it was set in 1999.

reply

I just finished watching the movie, and in the scene where the sports newscasters are talking about how awful they think it would be to send the Rangers to Alaska to play on a pond against some townsfolk, thay afterwards give the "in other news..." about Gretzky being named MVP for the season once again as well as top scorer... That means the movie is supposed to take place somewhere in the late 80's or early 90's.

Hope this clears the "Hockey Error" debate about Binghampton...

reply

Exactly right. The screenplay was written in the mid 1990s and they just never corrected it to match the AHL affiliate. At the time no one knew they were moving to Hartford from Binghamton.

reply

That would be right except for the fact that Little Richard had eyeliner permanently died into his brows in the early nineties as well as his 2nd nose job at the same time thus he couldn't have had the nose he was showing at the time....

reply

Not to be too picky, but the UHL was defunct at the time of your post and the IHL took over in the fall of 2007.

reply

The Binghamton Rangers played in the AHL (American Hockey League) and the AHL is still operating at near full capacity to the NHL's 30 teams. The AHL is the last line before the NHL, it is where all NHL teams play their top prospects.

Well, pre-production takes about 3 months filming a movie takes about 3-5 months, post production a few months more. This doesn't include writing and pitching the movie. This movie came out in 1999, I'd be willing to bet it was written before 1997

What alapardo said I think pretty much clears this up. I guessing that the movie was made in '97 and written that year if not bofore so the information was correct at that time but even more so if it was set in the late '80's early '90's. I'll have to look next time I watch it.
