Do we need the intro scenes in Miami?

Welles goes to Miami for a case in the intro, before he goes back home and gets the call the next day from Mrs. Christian.

Was any of that necessary, couldn't they have just cut that out so the film starts where it needs to relevant to the story?

No it wasn't necessary IMO.

It's to establish what he does for a living, that he is acustomed to travling great distances for his job and that his worked for high profile people/government types.

We get the speech of how great he is from four eyes early in to the film, but it's good to get an impression for ourselves about who this guy is instead of just being told which is lazy.

I get what it's for, but my question is is it necessary?

He didn't do anything particularly special, he just walked by the couple he was meant to monitor.

It's similar to Leon The Professional where we see him perform a contract at the start of the movie that's not related to the main plot.

Difference is, that scene shows how skillful he is, it's relevant to the character and the faith we the audience place in him going forward.

But in this movie it just didn't seem necessary it didn't add anything to the story or his character.

It was largely unnecessary but featured some cool Schumacher slo-mo, as well as Cage being ultra-polite to his clients, which is funny to watch throughout the film because we know what a nut-bar Cage can be!
