So... which actors did a good job riding in this film?

I love this movie. The music is timeless and the dialogue is perfect for the period. The horseback riding looks pretty wild -- running full tilt through all those trees, not to mention the rough ground with possible hidden potholes. I was really admiring Skeet Ulrich's riding until someone connected with the film said there was one actor that only really rode a horse once. Tell me that wasn't Skeet! The dismount on the fly at the Evans house was something to see! Which actors did most of their own riding? If they didn't, cudos to the stunt guys and the stunt coordinator.

they had civil war reinactors work as extras. I actually work with a guy that was a rider pretty cool stuff. The scene where they are storming into the town and a horse rares up and falls on a fence, my co-worker ran him into the fence.....i deserve a cookie

I don't remember anyone that was memorable.
12 hours a day for 30 years horseback it's something we notice:)
In fact, I think we were disappointed.
But I could be wrong, as it's been a couple of years since we've seen it and we really try not to dwell on things that we can't expect everyone to be great at.

According to Shamus' note in the screenplay, all of the actors were given riding lessons except for Jewel--she had grown up in a saddle and was already a proficient rider--but the only riding her role called for was on a mule.

Hi, I just noticed your old post. If you are still interested, most of the actors did a very good job of riding. I was one of the reenactor horsemen riding in the film. Skeet did a fine job but jeffrey Wright was probably the best rider of all the stars. The worst was by far Jonathan Meyers. Somehow he managed to rack himself on a saddle with no horn twice. I hope that this eases your mind about Skeet.

I would say that loads of that was some of the best stunt riding I have seen in a film. The riders did very good jobs. I would love to do film stunt riding.

For non-riders, what does this mean?
