Is Jewel bad?
I've never seen the movie but I have always wondered how Jewel is in the movie.
shareShe gives a solid performance.

thank you for that, it took forever before someone responded haha. If she was good, why do you think she hasnt done anything else?
shareI guess she gets more applause when singing ;) As far as I remember "Ride with the Devil" wasn't a big success - unfortunatly.

she's such a natural actress, for her first real movie, she's better than half of the poser actresses out there.

I remember he had bad press while filming Ride With The Devil. I think he was dickish and unkind to Jewel. As a singer, she had no movie experience, and I remember reading he made her feel even more incompetent than necessary, made her cry.share
If he earned the reputation of being a sour little pill, throughout the years with directors, casts and crews, it's no wonder he is not in demand anymore.
I wonder how come he and Leo remained fast friends.

in my opinion.....her acting, and the role in the movie, could be summed up in very few words: kind of pointless and horrible.
shareI thought she did a pretty good job. Her character mirrored Jewel, herself...quiet voice and unpretentious, but still in charge.
shareso yeah! i would definitely say see the movie and see how you feel about her performance......this board definitely has mixed reviews and stuff which is awesome! so i'd say just check it out! :-)
shareHer performance is kinda of wooden or nicely stated stoic; it was a serviceable performance. It could have been how she was asked to play the part. How a woman would conduct herself in that era. With that being said, it was a wonderful movie. The history channel rated it the most historically accurate film of the year also.
shareOP,
Why not just watch the film and judge for yourself?

No, Jewel was not bad. I had seen her only in this film, but I think she was a reasonably good actress.
But Ang Lee did not make full use of her talent. There should have been a scene where she was allowed to read some of her poetry.
I thought she was rather good, considering her lack of experience. I expected she'd be little more than eye candy, but instead found her performance effective and understated. I thought she was better than some of the more experienced cast members.
Another musician who surprised me was Steve Earle in The Wire. His role was small but he never hit a false note. Like Jewel, his performance was understated, avoiding the tendency of some inexperienced actors to do too much.
I too thought Jewel was good in the part she was given. She kinda reminded me of Renee Zellwigger.
shareEye candy?
You need contact lenses. Lol
She was a very ordinary woman. She was chosen because she wasn't "eye candy", just average, which makes the scenes with her more endearing, because it brings it to life instead of being "fantastic". We're given brutal realism, but it is written in such a way that it is quite interesting, with tragedy, comedy, drama, and action all well blended together.
