Nothing about this movie is heroic....

If anything, it shows what the State can do to any enemies that are in it's way.

It frightens me more than makes me feel safe that we have a responsive State.

The terrorist in this movie are people who've been pushed to the edge because of a lack of response to their grievances, and their grievances are political in the Palestinian question, not religious.

What this movie shows is that the US State can spit at any demands made by a people and take out extremists the move away from the greater work of moderates.

The cycle of violence shows that the CIA, FBI and the military are not and do not keep us safe. They're just there to protect their own interests.

I agree with most of your points except for:

The terrorist in this movie are people who've been pushed to the edge because of a lack of response to their grievances,
There is no excuse for the violence these people are capable of. They had no problem with the US when it was pumping billions of dollars into Afghanistan during the war with Russia and Iraq during it's war with Iran. So you tell me, what's changed?

Even if your point was valid then why strike the innocent people who suffer the same corrupt administration, the same people whose grievances are ignored? The millions of people who live third world lives in first world countries? Why strike the millions of people who took to the streets protesting the action to go to war?

Theirs isn't a war against a corrupt oppressive government. The terrorists in this movie are pawns, brainwashed into waging holy Jihad believing the life of every infidel must be extinquished in Allahs name.

Good guys may not finish last but they sure as sh*t don't finish first!

Also, the terrorists were brainwashed by power struggles that later turned religious to achieve similar goals. They are horrible people for corrupting a genuine political movement for the liberation of Palestine from Israeli occupation.

But the bigger issue is State power and how it can down full force on any opposition. Even rag tag terrorists. Mind you some of them with former CIA training from the Afghan Soviet War.

Americans need to wake up that their government does deals with the most crazed zealots in order to block the spread of wealth distribution in nations seeking democratic change. Then they have to always clean up their mess, which is what the War on Terror is all about. It's not about good vs. evil. It's about blowback for years of shoddy foreign policy.

Denzels character wasn't heroic..?

The Devil's in the detail, my lovelies... !

reply

To an extent that the character would never be a real FBI agent.

I could not see an FBI agent caring that much about civil rights, especially after learning about COINTELPRO.

reply

COINTELPRO is what stopped groups like the Nation of Islam, the Black Panthers, and various far left groups from establishing a foothold in the United States.

It's a very well known fact that all of those groups were KGB sponsored organizations. Their goal was to overthrow the US government muchlike the KGB sponsored African National Congress did with the Apartheid South Africa, and the KGB sponsored ZANLA and ZIPRA in Rhodesia.

If by "KGB sponsored organizations" you mean random progressive organizations that were infiltrated by COINTELPRO & framed as communist groups than you are correct.

I agree on all your points.

It's a frightening thought that a shift in policy breeds new enemies. And without any regard your leaders make this changes, without any forethought of the consequences. So foreign assets risk their lives for a purpose or interest of the US, then a rep/dem change comes to the white house, and just to shift your foreign policy just to screw with the opposite side of politics.

This foreign assets stop being supported, leaving them completely exposed to their enemies. If they survive, they'll have more than grievances to say. You'd do that too. If you had limited resources and you get dumped out in the cold to die, you'd vow revenge.

America should take care of it's allies.

About all those institutions not being there to keep you safe? Well of course that is their objective but they like more to cover their asses and you'd better not be in the way. It's a paradox I know but that's how they function. They have to keep you safe, but they cant trust you either. (and rightfully so)
