For storytelling purposes they created an element called "Etherium", which I suppose is equivalent to breathable vacuum. You hear it mentioned in the movie's first line--and never again.

Yeah, I had figured that it must have been mentioned somewhere in the film,but I couldn't remember where. But what do you mean "in the first line"? You mean it's the very-very first thing we hear in the movie?
