Treasure Planet MURDERED Disney Animation

Because of how big a flop this was, Disney stopped making animation. They are only now re-considering getting back in the business.

Hey, don't blame the movie itself--it's good. Blame the horrid marketing.

reply

Exactly. I was in a Disneyland store a few days ago,and the store had absolutley NOTHING in regards to the the movie Treasure Planet(Not even the movie or the sountrack!)

reply

Don't blame the movie. it's not the fault of the movie, it's a great film just not enough people wanted to see it at the time.

reply

thats true unfortuantly.

It certainly didn't help that they released it in between Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets and The Two Towers and didn't have that much marketing. I love this movie once I found it in 2004, and thought it would be beautiful in the theaters, then I found out it was released on my birthday. Guess what I went to see because I didn't hear about this movie? If you guessed the Chamber of Secrets you'd be right, and I was furious when I realized I could've seen this.

Now I'm not saying this is the best Disney movie ever. I'm saying that the heads of Disney seemed to WANT this movie to be the second to last nail in the coffin for 2-D animation. The final one was Home on the Range.

reply

I only just saw this film yesterday and expected it 2 be crap, but 2 my surprise its actually quite good. Its not amazing, but its not terrible either. Disney probably think that the reason it didnt do well was because it wasnt 3D, how wrong they were. 2D animation...Rest in Peace.

reply

It makes me depressed that Disney stopped making animated movies. That's what I always believed Disney was great for... These 3-D movies as of late barely amuse me, it's really just not the same. What happened to the classics like Aladdin?

I enjoyed this movie. It wasn't amazing, but definitely still good and entertaining. Bring back the animation, please?

Um, excuse me? Didn't it flop because everyone was too obsessed with 3D, Pixar-ish animation that they couldn't enjoy something as good as original 2D Treasure Planet?

That, and the poor marketing. Disney should've blamed itself for the bad outcome, not fired poor Clements and Musker. The movie got nominated for a freaking Oscar, for crying out loud.

Call me a drama queen and I'll jump!

A part of what bijoux91 says is true but it's not the entire reason.
Although people do crave such high quality graphics now a days that hand drawn animation is considered low quality, it's sad really.
Disney is coming out with The Princess and The Frog though!
It's supposed to be along the style of Aladdin and Hercules and Little Mermaid, etc.
So I'm excited.

P.S - Treasure Planet is definitely one of my favorite Disney movies.
Definitely a gem for any pirate lover.

reply

Actually Bijoux, the movie didn't flop because everyone's obsessed with 3D animation, that's the reason the execs. gave.

If you wanna see the reason why it flopped, just look at the release date. It landed right in between Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. and since most people I know don't remember ever seeing a commercial for it, it was doubly screwed.

Great planning there, Disney heads!!

On another note, I didn't know it got nominated for an Oscar!! SWEET! Some recognition, though it was probably just in the animated category since there weren't too many out that year, I don't think.

This isn't the first time Disney has screwed up over poor release time. Look at Rescuers Down Under-- Disney's first attempt at a great sequel. It flopped in the box office because it was released alongside some big competition-- Home Alone, if I remember correctly. That's their own fault. It has nothing to do with the film.

reply

Eerily enough, both movies are rated on the IMDb at 6.5...

Disney stopped doing 2D and started making 3D films because Dreamworks have done so well from it.

reply

2D disney animation may be dead and buried but there is one 2D animation that will live on forever, and thats japanese anime!!!

Treasure Planet was an absolute crackin movie!!! it should have won that oscar!! ^_^

Actually no...Disney didn't stop doing animation because of Treasure Planet. If I recall there were still a few other animated movies after TP...such as Brother Bear...Emperors New Groove 2...and there was Brother Bear 2.

The reason Disney stopped doing hand animation was because they felt it was too out of date, and started doing all their movies in CG because it was more "modern". So it had nothing to do with how well the movie did.

And honestly, look at what other movies came out at the same time. TP had to go up against Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. The movie itself is amazing, the story is engaging and the animation is superb. The only things that went wrong with the movie was that 1) Disney brought it out at the wrong time, and 2) they didn't do a good job advertizing the movie. I'm sure that had Disney released the movie at least two or three months later, it would have gotten a much wider audience and would have been more of a hit.

Treasure Planet was an AMAZING movie and was far from the horrible movie people make it out to be. Honestly Disney has made a lot worse. Such as Atlantis, and, as much as I did like it, Brother Bear wasn't exactly up to Disney's normal par either.

Really the only reason Treasure Planet didn't do so well was for the reasons I stated above. Disney didn't release it at the right time, and there was hardly any advertizing for it. It had nothing to do with the movies animation. If anything Treasure Planet had the best animation I've seen since The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast.

I agree with LovesDarkness, one of the reasons I wanted to see the movie in the first place was because of the great animation. I was getting a little tired of all the CG stuff that's been going around and really missed hand drawn. It's something about the texture of hand drawn animation that makes me feel all cozy in side. -fluffs kitty-

Treasure Planet probably is the actual reason disney stayed away from animated films for a few years(they did lose like 100 million bucks). Regardless, Disney hasn't made a classic animated movie since The Lion King. Look at the list of Disney movies post Lion King, some are decent but none of them could be considered to be great. This movie had potential though, Disney just screwed it up.

reply

it did flop at the box office. but you can't say it murdered disney.
If you want to point the finger at any disney movie then point it at The Return of Jafar. THAT movie started the whole sequel trend. and that led to the murdering of disney films. lol.

reply

I thought the BIG THING was that Rescuers Down Under started the sequel trend.

reply

Rescuers Down Under was made under Disney's big screen animation department and meant as a real feature length movie, Return of Jafar was essentially the first 3 episodes of the series edited together. I'll admit that as a kid I loved ROJ and watched it just as much as Aladdin, but in the last year I rewatched both ROJ and Lion King 2 and could barely finish them. These direct to DVD sequals are always made with lower budgets so they don't look or sound anywhere near as good as the originals and are obviously cash cows. The only sequal I've seen that I think is worth a damn is Pooh's Grand Adventure: The Search for Christopher Robin because the animation is not a carbon copy of Pooh's Many Adventures and it's actually suprisingly dark. I remember seeing it when it first came out and not thinking much of it but seeing it recently I fell in love with it. The less said about the movies that follow the better.
