I hate to say this, but the ending in the remake was better than the one in original.
The one in the original was corny as hell.
You say that now in 2020 after seeing it parodied for decades on The Simpsons and all kinds of satirical riffs on PotA, but if you had seen the original back in 1968 or even on TV in early broadcasts in the 70s, it would have made a much different impression on you.
