What was so bad about this, again?
I've not seen this film in a good 10 years but I remember enjoying it back then.
At least the ape effects were practical!

The first time I saw it, I liked the spaceship and space effects. Unfortunately, we only get that in the beginning and ending. The ape effects seem phony to me and the ape community setting looks to much like a Hollywood movie set (because it is). But I liked how in the original, it was mostly outdoor setting, giving it a more realistic feel. There are other problems, mainly that some of the dialogue wreaks of that "summer movie one-liner" variety. The movie also changes things that worked in the first movie, like the humans being able to speak. In the first movie, it gave the human characters an air of mystery and the reverse of apes speaking and humans not was a twisted irony.
In terms of acting, Wahlberg is one-dimensional, Roth overacts, and Warren is useless. The only 2 characters of worth are played by Bonham-Carter and Kristofferson. I mean, it was interesting of Burton to go for something different, I just think this was a failure.
Always liked this.
shareI thought that this was a very enjoyable film. A lot of films may eventually become entertaining, but the first half hour might be a bit boring. However, this movie was very entertaining from the very beginning until almost the end. The one problem I had is that the ending didn't make any sense to me and every time I hear somebody try to explain it to me, I always find holes with their theory. I don't know about other people, but if the ending was better, or there was a sequel to explain the ending, I would have rated this movie a 9, but because of the ending , I would give it a 6 or 7.
shareIt's the first film I saw multiple times in the theater (3 times I think). Of course, I was a goofy middle schooler at the time, but it's still hard for me to imagine hating it if I were to watch it again. I'm torn.

Endeavor to persevere.
It's supposed to suck because it doesn't measure up to the classic 1968 film that we all put on a pedalstal and bla bla bla.
Apparently it's a crime to enjoy both films.
I like this movie. And I like the original Ape films. Certainly this film is better than some of the original sequels like 'Beneath' and 'Battle'.
I like this movie. It's not bad at all.
yeah, watch the esteemed originals and you'll find them rife with errors and contradictions.
Swing away, Merrill....Merrill, swing away...share
I think there are two reasons why the Planet of the Apes-Reboot by Tim Burton hasn`t aged well.
One is Estella Warren. Completely useless as an actress, a forced "love story" which didn`t really fit into the movie. She really tainted the whole movie.
The other is Mark Wahlberg. It`s not that I dislike him as an actor. He does well within his limits. But he didn`t really carry the role as the charismatic human leader fighting for his life like Charlton Heston did.
I just recently watched all of the original ape movies....and you're right, compared to some of the sequels this a very good movie......it's not great but it's also not as bad as people make it out to be. Ending was just confusing.
