Much like you, I appreciated both the technical and intellectual merits of this production. Burton references the original Schaeffner film without 'apeing' it as it were. He does not dwell on the allegorical elements of the story, but leads the audience down a more whimsical, action-oriented storyline. To that end, it becomes a divisive production, with fans of the original series looking for the comforting, cerebral depth this film ultimately cannot provide. Burton is not an intellectual filmmaker, so why would anyone expect his version to be so? Perhaps another directed would have been better 'suited' for this reboot, but what we end up with is just fine. Wahlberg and Roth were an interesting pairing, but that was my only gripe. I think Depp replacing Wahlberg and Gary Oldman replacing Roth would have made for a far more interesting picture. As the original poster suggests, the wonderful supporting cast helped carry the picture, distracting us just enough from the miscast leads.
