Pretty different movie from Stand By Me. The only similarities would be that it has four boys coming of age in a small town and also the main character has issues with his Dad. Stand By Me is one of my all time favorite movies though. Watch October Sky, you won't regret it.

Uh, I haven't seen Stand By Me, but I think the similarities are: young boys and a railroad track.

I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

Actually, while watching this today, it reminded me of Stand By Me as well! Technically, it's not really similar, but did have a comparable feeling to it.

I love "Stand By Me"! I guess they're the same, in the less obvious way, in that they both really make you think about who you are and where you stand in the world. They'e both inspirational for different reasons, though. "Stand By Me" seemed like it was ment to help its audience understand the transition from child to adult and how our morals/principals play a role in the people we've always been and will become. Who we are when we're twelve, is more or less who'll we'll be when we're forty. "October Sky" on the other hand, seemed like it wanted to empower its audience to escape the confinment of "cannot and should not" set upon us by society, our peers/family members and even ourselves, to achieve a higher level of success; whatever that may mean to you personally. Defying the odds, if you will. They're alike in that they both teach important lessons, that most of us learn at some point in our lives, willing or not.
