Over the years I have found many people who stated this.
I'm from South Africa and belong to the local Rocketry organizations SAASA and ASR. Even here people say they were inspired by the movie.

Every time I watch it I spend an hour researching rocketry on the web afterward. I ordered an Estes launch pad and starter rocket to try to get my kids interested as well. So yes, I kinda have; fascinating hobby.

I started rocketry in 1967-68 at age 8-9 in the middle of the Apollo program, have drifted out and back into it several times. Now in my middle 50s, I still get out and launch rockets a few times a year.
When I was first in rocketry as a kid, I remember reading an account of the Coalwood kids in a library copy of Scientific American.
