This is one of the best inspirational movie that i have ever seen.
I wonder why its not in the TOP 250.
October Sky is a great story told with middle-of-the-road filmmaking. During its best moments it is very inspirational and touching thanks mainly to Gyllenhaal and Cooper's perforances and a nice musical score. However many of the other characters are 2-dimensional, a lot of the incidents and obstacles Homer faces feel contrived and Johnston's reliance on montages set to generic '50s music is rather bland.
At the end of the day, it just isn't one of the greatest films ever made.

the Top 250 is a joke. Toy Story 2 is in it...are you seriously telling me that Toy Story 2 is out of the hundreds of thousands movies every made in the Top 250???????

Yah.. stupid and senseless moves like Ice Age, Toy Story, Sweeny Todd(8.9) yukkkk present in top 250. While this movie nowhere.
Let me tell u.. I am an Engineer. when i was in engireeing college, nearly all 400 students in hostel saw this movie. They all liked it so much that saw it many times and today also if u ask them which is there favorite movie it will be sure one of them.
Dumb people like who don't have logics to understand anything and believe in supernatural thing should not watch this movie.
I'm also an Engineer and I can definitely appreciate that this is one of the few films that depicts engineering in an exciting light.

One of the greatest aspects to this story is how an average student excels when he becomes excited by something that he'd never have guessed would appeal to him. That's why I think it's great to hear that this film is being shown in schools because it may serve as some inspiration for students who haven't yet chosen a career path.
This movie is not convoluted or challenging in any way. It is told in a very straight-forward manner that can be understood by anyone who has ever seen a movie before. Claiming that people who rank it poorly simply didn't "get it" is extremely narrowminded.

Now whats that supposed to mean. I have seen over 600 Hollywood Myself and this movie is one of my personal favorites. I have seen nearly all 250 movies. What i feel is that this movie really deserves a place in the top 250 an rankig of over 8/10 at least. 7.6 is too low for this movie.

Its not narrow minded. It depends on the taste of ur movies. Who don like such types of movies SHOULD NOT RATE IT LOW.
When I said that the film was straight forward and could be understood by anyone who'd watched a film before it was in response to your post:

That was the narrow minded attitude of which I spoke.
It is not a negative criticism of the film to say that it is straight-forward in its storytelling. I merely mentioned it because it's totally bogus to claim that those who are critical of it did not understand it.
I don't bother to rate movies on IMDB because I generally don't care about a film's position on the Top 250. I sometimes use the list to find some unseen films that might be worth a viewing but once I've seen the film myself it doesn't matter to me how others rate it because my opinion is my own. However I do enjoy discussing the strengths and flaws of films with others so I do check out what people are saying on the message boards.
I do like October Sky. It is of a genre of movies I wish there were more of. However the criticisms that I mentioned earlier in this thread still stand and if I were to assign a ranking I would give it about 7.5/10.
Okay, it's one thing to complain about toy story 2 being there, but Toy Story 1 truly is brilliant. When was the last time you saw it? Every scene is significant and moves the story in a new way, and the clever jokes are endless. Not to mention, it was the first 3d animated feature.
As much as I like to see my fave picks in the Top 250, I do have to admit it IS a joke. Every average to above-average new theater release is always in there to my horror (The Hangover - #130? as of today) but the buzz dies down and so does the stop. Many beautiful movies are not in there, many times because the quantity of votes won't place them there either. It sucks. This movie is wonderful, I don't know if Top 250 worthy, but don't feel sad if it isn't, think of it as because of the previous reasons.

The movie isn't something too special. It just stays the same for the most part. You've got some great movies in the top 250 but this isn't one of them.

shareIt doesn't deserve to be. It's by the same director who ruined Jurassic Park. Compare to this to many tiles in top 250 and I don't think this would stand a chance. Like the last Jurassic Park movie, I found myself bored at points. There's some great scenes in October Sky but the scenes are so dragged out.
I would rather put something like August Rush or The Mighty in this 250 than October Sky.

There was a movie that I absolutely loved and it WAS in the Top 250 and I bought it on DVD and watched it a second time. It was even better the second time and I was going to watch it a third time but it fell out of the Top 250 and now I don't even like it. I wish I hadn't bought it and I wouldn't have if I had known that it wasn't going to stay one of the best 250 movies ever made. I'm trying to sell the DVD on ebay now. I don't even like to see the box. It's in the closet under some clothes that I never wear.
Anyhow, I hope you can get October Sky into the Top 250 so that you can like it as much as it deserves to be liked.

i disagree cause Titanic is nothing great (6/10, maybe a 7/10 tops... but to be honest i aint seen this movie in ages (dang near since it came out) so i should probably review it again cause i probably look at movies in a different way overall now than i did at the time it came out which would have put me roughly around 18 years old)

I give this movie atleast an 8.0, it's certainly insulting that a good movie such as this one be rated less than "Star Wars: Episode III" an awful hideous movie for all time [which got rated a 7.9, who are they kidding?] I'd also be glad to replace this movie with "Changeling" (8.0?? What? based on Angelie Jolie's acting?? ha ha ha..) at the 226th spot on the top250, that was beyond awful as well...
shareI wouldn't put it anywhere near the top 250. It's sickly sweet, predictable, cliched and lacking in both character authenticity and development. There are some solid performances, but what lets it down is an awful 'Disneyfied' script. It doesn't even come close to movies like The Godfather, The Shawshank Redemption, Little Miss Sunshine, etc. It's better than a lot of other Hollywood guff - but definitely not worth a top 250 place.
shareI dont think this film should be anywhere near the top 250 either, dont get me wrong its a nice film but it isn't epic like most of the films in the top 250 and i could list alot more that aren't in the top 250 that should be there way ahead of this one.

It's good, yeah sure, but it's not Top 250 stuff, no way. I would've liked it more if the film was a bit more gritty and bit less cheesy.
