Autograph picture of Braun was it fake?

I'm watching the movie and the scene where Homer gets the letter and autograph picture from von Braun. His mom winks at his dad and says "I wonder how he knew it was your birthday". It seemed kinda weird, was the letter and "autograph" fake?

reply

No, they (or at least the mother) had written to von Braun asking for the photo.

No, he actually didn't know it was Homer's birthday. Homer had been writing to him for some time and he responded with a letter of encouragement and an autographed photo, believing he might want it. It just so happened that it arrived on his birthday, rather than coming as an intentional birthday present. Or so I think?

I always interpreted that scene as showing that his mother wrote the letter and signed the picture as Von Braun. Obviously there is no proof either way but the way she said "How did he know it was your birthday" and the way she looked at his dad made me think it was fake and a way to make him feel better.

I agree with the poster above, the mother wrote to Von Braun. That was why she winked at the father when she said "how did he know it was your birthday?" because SHE had told Von Braun. This is what Hickam writes in his memoir "Rocket Boys", though he received it on Christmas rather than his birthday.
