I remember comming across the same radio interview. It's posted at freddies site I think and reads an awful lot like him trying to sound cool and just making up excuses. The "failure" of the WC movie is a lot more complex than a last minute rewrite which,if one is aware of the sittuation, this was not.

There was however a last minute decision to cut the holographic merlin character (which may have ultimately resulted in the traitor subplot not making sence and being edited out after test screenings). Freddie had to act with a doll as a stand in for scenes with it and the film was edited around it. Though merlin was supposed to provide the neccessary exposition for explaining the traitor and that was missing in the work print so when the traitor showed up everyone went WTF?!!!

The Pilgrim traitor subplot was cut because test audiences were too confused that Admiral Bill Wilson, the Pilgrim traitor, was also the guy in control of the space station seen at the beginning.

From what I understand, the decision to cut Merlin was not last minute. Originally, Merlin was a wise-cracking AI character that was created by Blair's father. However, Merlin got cut down because of budget issues and also Mainiac wasn't given enough smartass lines. If you can find the novelization of the movie, both Merlin and the Pilgrim traitor subplot are in there.

"From what I understand, the decision to cut Merlin was not last minute. "

Yeah, it was early enough that they realized it would cost a lot of money to do the computer effects buy also likely that they realized it was a horrible idea to star with. However the decision wasnt early enough because they did actualy film the sequences to allow for it to be put in digitally, though they never did record the dialogue for it. So that's really what I was getting at by last minute. (Poor choice of words I agree). And that was what specifically made the traitor subplot confusing because the audience then missed the critical explanation needed to make sense of it all as this would have been suplied by Merlin who is the one that discovers the hidden signal being transmited from the Tiger('s) Claw to the Kilrathi from the traitor on the Tiger Claw (presumably Sansky, hence why he disapears part way through the movie - leaving the bridge - injured)

There are elements of the traitor plot left over in the movie though. Also, Sansky at one point looks at a picure in his quarters of him and Adm. Wilson. During the Kilrathi attack, Sanskt is also seen thumbing a pilgrim cross, seemingly distracted in thought, when he delays the "sheilds up" order.

There may be more that is slipping my mind at the moment.

"Merlin got cut down because of budget issues and also Mainiac wasn't given enough smartass lines. "

That's not really true though. They realized that they didn't need *two* comic relief characters and cutting one of them wasn't acceptable and the other would save them money by cutting. I don't think they really did anything to maniacs character that wasn't to some degree in the script.

I was only repeating what I'd been told from other Wing Commander fans. I found the Merlin/Mainiac thing a bit odd, because if you read the novelization and then watch the movie...Mainiac pretty much does the same stuff. I'm wondering if it was one of those "we were planning to, buuuut..." things that happened during the making of this film.
