OMG a 3.5!
It was cliched and a little dumb but it at least deserves a 5. I didn't think it was that bad.

shareI guess a lot of low ratings came from people who played the computer games. They were masterpieces for their time. They had great stories (unlike the film), and great actors (unlike the film). Very much a case of, it was a poor movie, but seemed even poorer in light of the games. The fact that the games were so good makes the movie suck even more.
share3.5 is an injustice. 3.5 is the type of rating one gives many of the movies shown on Syfy.
I never paid the game so maybe my expectations were low going in, but I thought there was a descent story which featured something I've never seen in a sci-fi movie, an interracial intimate relationship between two principal characters.
While that is not enough to rate a movie highly, it is noteworthy and was well executed. There were other interesting things in the movie, but together they rate higher than a 3.5.
I would place WC alongside the first Starship Troopers as less than epic movies that turned out to be entertaining guilty little pleasures.
It was by no means a masterpiece, but I do enjoy watching it. I gave it a six and may have been generous. I never played the games, but I do understand how some people might hate it for being inferior to the games. I'm still pissed as hell at Paul Anderson for f%$#ing up Resident Evil and AvP so bad. Those games were great! On that basis I can understand the 3.6 rating.
shareIt just amazes me that the same director got a b-grade cast of nobodies for the movie while the game it was based on had a cast of well known, well regarded actors. You would think it would be the other way round. The story in the game was far better written also. Heck, you could almost just string together the live action sequences of the game with a bit of space combat action in between and end up with a better movie.
shareActually... a devoted fan going by the handle of 'Queeg' did exactly that and made movies out of both Wing Commander III and IV.
And guess what, they are MUCH better than this sorry piece of crap!
You can find them for download on the Wing Commander CIC:
Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger v3.0 (Runtime: 1h58)

Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom v1.0 (Runtime: 3h00)

Oh nice. I'll definately check them out. Sounds like what the movie should have been.
shareWell, nobody's seen what the movie should have been... But Chris Roberts does want to take another crack at it by reediting it with a bunch of the stuff that got left out due to studio and budgetary pressure and by redoing all the Alien Effects.
shareWell, it's currently at 4 even, so it's jumped .5 in the last three years or so. Seems like a small thing, but for a movie this old to jump half a point is kinda interesting IMO.
Personally, I'd give it a 5, but a weak 5.
