Hero...

When I was a kid in the late 80s/early 90s I absolutely adored this, and it was always, ALWAYS known as 'Teenage Mutant HERO Turtles. It wasn't until later (possibly when the films were made) that it changed to Ninja, which I think is crap.

These days my nephews don't even believe that it used to have a different (and better) name.

The hero bit was because in some countries like the UK, the word ninja was considered to violent.

Not only that, but they edited out the nunchucks because kids were trying to imitate what Michelangelo was doing and wound up landing themselves in a hospital (stupid parents probably buying weapons for kids). I think it also used to be illegal to show them on television in Australia. Because of this, the U.S. version had the character change his weapon to some sort of turtle grappling hook.

No worries, though. I still knew in my mind that Michelangelo's ultimate weapon of choice is and always will be nunchucks. At least the NES games were programmed that way.

It was also 'Ninja' Turtles, not hero.

Thanks for clearing that.

I noticed right after I posted this that other people have asked too.

Not in the UK, at least not at first.

It was Hero Turtles as the series was edited in the UK. It really became known as the Ninja Turtles in 2002-2003 when the 4kids show premiered.

Cool. :) I'd stopped watching it waaaaaaaay before 2002.
