Why did Rocksteady's voice change when he was mutated?

That's something I've always wondered.

If we're talking about season 1, I guess to show that he changed into a powerful mutant. If we're talking about as the show went on I think the mutagen was starting to make him and Bebop extermely stupid, because his later Season 2-8 mutant voice was more stupid sounding than Season 1..

I've thought about that, but then why was there no difference in Splinter or Bebop (except for the occasional snort)?

I was talking about in the mini-series (first season), but then again, the turtles and Splinter didn't get dumber.

Ya got me. April's voice didn't change when she turned into the Catwoman. Maybe it just was Cam Clarke. If you notice Leonardo's voice changes too.

I think Rocksteady and Bebop got dumber because they weren't to smart to begin with.

Another thing I noticed about Rocksteady in the first two seasons he wore camouflage pants but in mid season 2 they were changed to brown shorts why?

reply

Probably because simple brown pants are easier to animate. And didn't Rocksteady stop wearing a helmet after Season 1.

Yeah he did, and there was never any explanation why. As for the voice change, that's one thing that's got me pondering for many years now and the whole thing of the pair's intelligence ebbing away due to the mutagen was the reason I was thinking of at the time, but I suppose it's because the writers wanted to evolve the characters into something different, Remember how less goofy the Foot were in the first season? B&R's comedic side had not been fully established and Shredder didn't possess the dry wit he had in later eps. I too noticed that Leonardo's voice had changed from being deep and grim to higher and more chirpy in the third season, but again I don't know why. I guess the writers thought he seemed too moody or something along those lines.

Yeah I loved Cam Clarke's voice in the first season, for both Leonardo and Rocksteady. The deeper voice sounded sooooooo much better! I also noticed Rocksteady had the helmet only in season one, maybe part of two too. Lastly I noticed both Rocksteady and Bebop were tougher and more serious in season 1.

reply

Rocksteady didn't have his helmet in Season 2 at all, and yes both him and Bebop were more tougher than they eventually became probably because parents kicked up a fuss about the violence (it's only a cartoon you know!) in the show that things had to be slowly toned down a notch starting with B&R's toughness and later phasing out Mikey's chucks, I did like the grappling hook a little bit but it's not a ninja weapon so it doesn't really count and Mikey did some really cool tricks with the chucks too like trying to change a lightbulb with them and bringing the Turtlevan to a hault when Shredder took over it and all that, of course I've only got to see them in their full unedited glory by watching old eps on YouTube as in the UK most of all the nifty tricks he did with them were also cut out back in the day which was a shame!

I miss the nunchakus too. I think they wanted to streamline (not sure I'm using the right word) the series for global use, and since showing nunchakus in video games, movies, and television was illegal or strongly discouraged in Europe (or at least the UK) at the time (I don't know if that's still the case), the animators just decided to have Mikey use a different weapon so they wouldn't have to cut foreign parts as much. I read on Wikipedia that nunchakus are or were illegal in the UK because of the violence they displayed in a Bruce Lee film (The Chinese Connection if I remember correctly), but I'd guess it also has to do with how easy it is to hurt yourself with such a weapon.

The change in Leo's voice was probably due to the voice director feeling he should sound more like a teenager, and the deep voice made him sound too much older. Agreed, I liked it better in season 1 and wish it stayed the same.

reply

I've just been rewatching Season 2 and I think Leo's voice started to get slightly higher in "Enter, the Fly" ironically when Baxter was replaced by Bebop and Rocksteady.

reply

What Brinatello said was right. Leo's voice became higher so he'd sound younger, least I recall reading that somewhere. I also preferred his lower-sounding voice for both Leo and Rocksteady. And I also wish Rocksteady would have kept the helmet.
