Why was the old Playmates Shredder figure shirtless?

I don't remember him ever being shirtless on the show.

I always wondered about that, too. That seemed like an odd decision when pretty much every other figure looked like their cartoon counterpart.

I never actually owned the figure, though I do have the four original turtle figures themselves as well as Splinter, and looking at pics of the Shredder figure, I'm kinda glad I never got it. On top of lacking a gray tunic, the metal parts of his suit all look dark blue rather than silver, and he's all awkwardly posed. Looks like a cheap bootleg compared to the others, which are actually pretty good for their time.

I think the original '88 wave was designed before the cartoon series was created and many of the figures were loosely based off their original Mirage counterparts, that's why Shredder has that crouched stance like the one he had in his first appearance in the original comic and why the Turtles and Splinter have no pupils and why Donatello and Leonardo have shoulder straps.

I never had the original Shredder figure myself but I did have the Wacky Action Slice 'N Dice version as well as the Movie Star Super Shredder and both the original and Road Ready Mutations figures, but I did want the original despite the wrong colour scheme as well as original Bebop and Rocksteady but I could never find them!
