Anyone else think that she would have made for a good return character? The episode that she appeared in, Raphael meets his match, seems to be a pretty popular episode and they had good chemistry together. Personally, I think she'd have been great for a "one appearance per season" character.
I think the main problem was that the writers didn't know what to do with her. Raphael had a crush on her, but they kinda left it up to the imagination whether it was unrequited or not. She was friendly, but she never really addressed the subject. I think the writers weren't sure how it would be taken. On one hand, she was a mutant. On the other hand, she was a human (by origin) and Raphael was a turtle. Where could they have gone with the story? I think they were worried that some would consider it inappropriate and dropped the whole thing. Of course, that didn't stop Michelangelo from having a fling with Cala of the Neutrinos.
Maybe they were just worried that they'd be coming across as portraying a non-human character as cute? That certainly didn't stop whoever wrote the description for Mona Lisa's toy. The whole description pervs over how hot she is and then throws in maybe one or two lines about her tackling the Foot.
From what I heard Peter Laird hates her as much as Venus. He seems to hate female turtles for some reason. Put iut this way if you really want to annoy Laird just go up to him and mention Venus and Mona Lisa and he'll go into fits of rantings. Yes he hates them that much.
Wow, I had no idea. I imagine that the characters were forced on the show by the studios. I could maybe see a problem with Venus, the "fifth" Turtle who knows magic, but I don't see what the problem is with Mona Lisa. Maybe it's the character concept that he doesn't like?
I'm guessing you spoke to him personally and he got really upset when you mentioned one of them?
No it's just what I read from various sources. He has these rules and two of them are no female turtles and Turtles don't date (Mona Lisa was a potential girlfriend to Raph). Another one is no additional Turtles which probobly explains why Carter wasn't a Turtle.
I'm not to sure how Mona Lisa came about but Venus WAS forced on the show. Sabin said they'd only make Next Mutation if they included a female turtle but Laird has said The 4 turtles are the only ones of their kind whcih is why they are not supposed to be additional turtles. Laird has made it known that he does hate Venus. He's gone as far as saying she will never appear again.
Thank you very much. That explains a lot. A "Turtles don't date" rule would definitely explain why Mona Lisa isn't welcome. And the "no female Turtles" rule works for his problem with Venus. If he's gone on record to say that there are to be no additional turtles, then I wonder how he feels about Slash and Tokka. For what it's worth, they haven't made their way to the new series and I imagine that says something about them.
I don't know. I think Laird takes the story too seriously. It doesn't have to be the ultra-cartoonish style of the 80s cartoon, but I get the feeling that he wants it to be a legitimate martial arts masterpiece or something. When you have a name like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, you pretty have camp written into the title itself. I think there needs to be some sort of a balance. Of course, it's not my story and they're not my characters.
Well it depends how they're written. Slash was Bebop's pet turtle who got mutated so I think that's acceptable but Venus wasn't acceptable and I can understand why he got upset. it contradicts the last of their kind rule.
Tokka along with Rahzar were only created for the Movie becuase they couldn't use Bebop and Rocksteady who were due to appear in Secret of the Ooze but Laird and Eastman didn't want them in the movie and "fought tooth and nail" to prevent it so that's how Rahzar and Tokka were created. I read Laird didn't like making Bebop and Rocksteady goofy and stupid but I don't think he hates them but I doubt we'd see them in the new series although there are little references to them.
I can understand his complaints about Bebop and Rocksteady being bumbling and chaotic henchmen, but I still think that they have potential. Some of the comic book villains, like the Joker from Batman, have been pretty campy or goofy in previous incarnations. However, the people in charge of those series didn't throw them out, they just updated them to reflect on more recent trends. I think Bebop and Rocksteady would be great in a role similar to that of Hun from the 2003 series.
The new series is based on the original comics and I remember Peter Laird saying if it isn't the comics it doesn't exist. Bebop and Rocksteady were both created for the 80's cartoon but as I said they are still references to them although they might never appear again.
That's a shame. I wonder who has the legal rights to the characters that weren't featured in the comics. If it's Laird, it would be awesome if he'd be willing to sell the rights to them. It's not likely, but it would be cool.
I suggest you could start a petition to get them back. I have seen alot of posts on the net about which character would you like to see in the new series and Bebop and Rocksteady have been mentioned alot. BTW Krang had a cameo in the new series. He was one of the Utroms and his name got mentioned.
I saw that scene. He was complaining about having to crawl and another utrom got on him about him being whiny.
As for a petition, it's a nice idea, but I don't think it would have any affect. If Eastman is against the use of characters not found in the comic and is known to personally dislike some of the characters, I don't think there will be much changing his mind. Besides, it's too late in the series to bring them in. They'd have to start from scratch.
Yeah guess so besides Bebop and Rocksteady won't last under the new Shredder anyway. He beats Baxter up for his failure agaist the Turtles and that was due to the Turtles outsmarting Baxter. In the 80's version Bebop and Rocksteady failed cos they always goofed up and just imagine what Shredder would have done to them in the new series if they were around.
I was thinking of a more serious version of the duo, like one where Rocksteady is like a villainous version of the Arnold Schwarzenegger Commando-type and Bebop is a straight up thug. They still wouldn't be a match for the Turtles talent-wise, but they'd be far more competent. They may not be trained in martial arts, but they could still use their wits, superhuman strength, and firearms to their advantage.
Besides, I think Shredder picks on Stockman because he's physically frail. Hun loses all of the time and you never see him getting an eye poked out.
Peter Laird seems like a douche. I guess he's like a pre-school boy who can't stand girls who can fight, especially mutant ones. Kevin Eastman should have kept the rights and had Peter sell them.
Read the other day that Mona Lisa WAS originaly going to be a turtle but Laird and Eastman both didn't want that. I think they both feared that she'd eventually became part of the team due to popularity. Remember the no additional turtles rule. But Laird ended up hating her anyway as she was Raph's love interest which goes back to the Turtles don't date rule. Mona Lisa was created by someone working for Fred Wolf. I think other characters such as the Punk Frogs were as well. Bebop and Rocksteady were created by Eastman and Laird for the show. I think Fred Wolf's team created the characters who didn't appear in the comics and for the record Eastman created Venus becasue the show who did Next Mutation basicly forced him (and Laird but I've got the impression he was against it from the start) into it.
Couldn't they have just added a strict no-dating rule for the scripts no matter how many female team members they had? I suppose Peter didn't think much of Kala either. They also could have made the turtles gay if there wasn't too much temptation to have them date each other.
Personally, I think having a female turtle strictly for the purpose of a love interest is stupid. It's more interesting when they show affection for other races. As a fighting femme fatale who's all about kicking ass and taking names with little to no romantic interest in the other four turtles, however, I'd be fully supportive.
Maybe they're trying to avoid any controversy or accusations. If you had a Turtle dating a human, there might be accusations of well... Adding a no dating rule is an easy way to dodge that bullet. However, they could create more mutants, like the Turtles, if they're to have a love interest and avoid any controversy. In that regard, it's likely that they want to keep the cartoon and the comic strictly an action story.
I would kind of like to see a fighting Mona Lisa, but I think the character would lose some of her interesting qualities if her relationships remained platonic. Really though, it seemed like they were dancing around eggshells in her one appearance as it was. Raphael had an obvious crush on her, but she didn't outwardly return those feelings. They might not be able to keep that up forever. Eventually, it would have to be made known where she stood.
Here's something interesting regarding Venus I've not told you guys yet. Back in the late 90's after next mutation was released All the Turtles including Venus had their own blogs and it would report on the adventures they had. it would include all the characters including the ones from the TV shows and comics. I know Dragon Lord, Krang and Bonesteel appeared. The minute Eastman soled his half to Laird he got rid of Venus and guess what guys? She didn't even get a exit storyline she just vanished. No mention what so ever to where she went. She was there one minute gone the next. I'd have had her revealed she was a spy for Shredder and the turtles had to have a final showdown with her.
So there you have it Peter Laird just couldn't be bothered to write out Venus. He'd rather do it the lazy way. Bit strange how she went.
Peter Laird owns the rights to ALL the characters in the series and the reason there's no Krang (not a big part anyway) Bebop, Rocksteady and the Technodrome in the new series is because he doesn't want to use them. Anyway apperently in the new game released this year they'll be a surprise character Hopefully it'll be a character I've just mentioned.
For the 25th Anniversary there is going to be a atright to DVD movie and it basicly be a crossover woth the 80's cartoon and Bebop and Rocksteady WILL be in it. I'll look forward to seeing that.
They had a "Turtles don't date" rule? Might as well drop the 'teenage' from the title, then! Part of what I loved about this episode WAS that Raph found someone he was sweet on, that for once one of these young teenage turtles were given the chance to make a personal connection that had never been available before. It's just sad to think that the creators wanted to limit their characters from opportunities to develop. If I were a Turtle and I was told by some cosmic overlord of my universe "you will never find true love" I don't think I would have fought against Shredder so hard.
I watched that episode the first time it aired and was thrilled to find it on VHS a year or so later. I was always hoping Mona Lisa would return. It's so disappointing to think some close-minded "rule" prevented her return.
Yeah, pretty much. I was going to say that it was possible that she had a one time appearance for the sole purpose of selling her toy, but it didn't come out until a year after the episode. How funny that she would get a VHS tape and an action figure, but never an on-screen return.
Yeah, some toys even had cameos in the show solely to justify their existence. Tattoo (a sumo wrestler covered in tattoos) stands out in my mind as an example of this. He appears in the opening scene of a single episode, inexplicably transforms into a hamster, and disappears never to be seen again.
Ace the Duck was another one. He was only seen for 2 seconds and did Pizzaface (crazy chef) even appear in the series?
Anyway I'm sure you've all heard now. Laird no longer owns the rights. Nickolodeon have just brought them so I'm sure if they want to use Mona Lisa they can but no Venus please we're better off without her.
Yep it happend just the other day. I'm not sure if I like it either. I'd like to see what direction they take it and wheather they stay to the comics or make it their own.
Yeah I'm willing to give it a chance. If they do bring Back Mona Lisa I will repect them for it. She needed to appear again. I wouldn't mind Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady back as well but I'll go off it if they bring Venus back. Didn't like her at all. the turtles don't need her ;)
But if they do bring Venus back, Peter Laird would probobly go and burn down the Nickolodeon HQ building.
Thing is Peter Laird didn't like love interests. well I don't know what his stance is on the others but it's well known he hates Venus and loads of rumours that he forbid Mona Lisa from appearing again and when laird was in charge Venus was forbidden as well. Notice in Turtles forever that Next Mutation was nowhere to be seen when you saw all those incarnations of Turtles. You even saw the anime there and that played a bigger part than next mutation.
Raph had a girlfriend in the Archie comics. She was a fox called Ninjara. Perhaps Mona Lisa episodes would have been like that if they'd kept her.
She seems like she would have been a fun character. I've only seen a few pictures of her, and I don't know much about her personality, but it would have been interesting to have seen a sword-weilding fox team up with the Turtles from time to time.

BTW Forgotten_Hero, Next Mutation is basicly treated like the movie Batman and Robin. Most people ignore it as not many liked it and Peter Laird hated it.
I didn't care for The Next Mutation either. A live action TMNT series was bound to suffer from limitations. We weren't likely to see elaborate mutant costumes for anyone other than Splinter and the Turtles themselves and visuals like the Technodrome were completely out of the question. That left us essentially with weekly variation of the first movie; only done on a smaller budget and presumably with less talented writers.
To make matters worse, they wasted no time in replacing Shredder with a dragon-faced character who was essentially a less charismatic version of the same type of villain. And then they got tied up in some crappy vampire plot. Oh, and they had a silverback gorilla gangster with an endless supply of henchmen dressed up in mismatched color coded "mobster" outfits from the 1930s.
All in all, it's a wonder that the series made it past its first season.
but why didn't April appear in first series? I agree with you the villans looked like Power Ranger rejects. The way they handeled Shredder was disrespectful. I mean out of all the turtles VENUS WAS THE ONE WHO DEFEATED HIM????? It should have been the original four after all they have been fighting him from day one.
There is a myth that Next Mutation got the axe so Sabin could consentrate on Power Rangers. It was cheaper for them to work on their own show as they didn't own the rights to Turtles and they'd have had to pay Eastman and Laird each time they'd used them. Remember that Power ranger and Turtles crossover? Some reckon it was a subliminal message telling people which show to like (the turtles were hypnotised by the villan so they were working with them)
Back in 1990 I remember seeing Mona Lisa for the first time and my first reaction was, damn!!!!!Uh,she's naked. Then there was a time when I was obsessed with the character.I wished she appeared in another Episode. The Bug Man character did get another episode and he was not a well developed character.Though there was some changes I was shocked that Playmates made a figure of Mona Lisa as well.I thought she was hot.Eastman and Laird must have been out of thier minds not to like the character.Venus was a horrible character.

Apparently, they felt that she'd be immediately recognized as an impact player if she defeated an established opponent like Shredder. Instead, I think it made a lot of people resentful. Having no history against Shredder, she simply walked in and robbed the Turtles of the final victory they'd be seeking for years. I think they also attempted to establish that dragon guy as a greater threat than Shredder.
"Venus' magic has defeated Shredder once and for all, but will the combined strength of the five Ninja Turtles be enough to defeat Lord Not-Worth-Googling-His-Name?"

The Power Rangers were unquestionably the bigger group in the mid-90s. They offered live action combat in contrast to the Ninja Turtles' animated slapstick antics. By this point in the game, the animated series was no longer on air and the Turtles were trying to reestablish themselves.
Not the finest hour for the Turtles.

Yeah, she was pretty hot. Nice personality too. reply share
I recently purchased season 4 box set on DVD.I am still amazed that CBS allowed Mona Lisa to be in the episode. It looked to me like they were trying to throw a little senuality into the series. After 20 years I never forgot that charater.I do hate it when writers devolpe a character only to use him or her once and that's it.Well, that's history now.
There are 2 things I would like to do.I would like to find the writer of the episode and shake his hand.As well as the animator who designed Mona Lisa.I don't want to sound perverted but dang, they gave her one hell of a body.
I was thinking the reason why they never brought her back(well, aside from Laird not liking the character)was that she was probably deemed to racy at the time.I mean we are talking about 1990 here.I wonder if the writers got flak from parents or what ever over her.I was like 14 at the time this episode aired. My jaw hit the floor.Especialy when Raph wrestles Mona Lisa to the floor of the yachts bridge. My reaction like, whoa.Again, she is one of those characters he just can't forget.Good going Fred Wolf films.
That is true about the Cleo character.I think what I meant was when he explained her "origin story"you see her as a human but when she gets mutated in the sub's engine room she is no longer waring the dress. Now when I first saw the episode when she first appears I said to myslf"yeah she's a mutant".I do agree with you about Laird hating the character.I read that myself on another site.I would have loved seeing her taking on the Foot clan that would have been hillarious or breaking into the Technodrome to resque the Turtles.
Hmm. "Next time we meet, I'm gonna break your arms!" was a quote I never actually saw when playing the Street Fighter II games. Does every fighter have a third winning quote he or she almost never says?
Not to my knowledge. That was one of his two quotes in the original Street Fighter and in the Turbo edition. I guess they must have done away with the quote in later entries in the series.
I deleted that.It was an idea I had.If the creators of the Nick series will reintroduce Mona Lisa.I would love to see her updated. Here are a few thoughts I had:
Keep her previous form as human She is a collage student but a biology major this time around who gets an internship at a research lab.She has a peculiar interest in reptiles and amphibians The Foot clad break into the lab looking for something Mona is alerted by the noise and goes to investigate leaving the cage of her pet salamander open which it crawls out She is overpowered by the Foot.Shredder takes out a canister of mutagen and pours it on her as punishment for interferring They leave her there, she begins to change.
I like it. Unfortunately, I doubt that we'll see any sort of update of the 1980s style of TMNT adaptations at any point in the future. I'd like to see her return in a serious or comical adaptation, but I doubt we'll be seeing many mutations in later adaptations of the story.
Thanks and yeah. However, what I mean is incoporate her in the character design they will go with.I know this would sound strange but I would have loved to have seen her in the 2003 style(though with Peter Laird and Eastman at the helm that would never happen).I think she would have looked amazing.Someone on thetechnodrome.com taked about this but yeah, one can hope.
I don't know what Nickolodeon plan on doing with the series but come on Mona's got enough fans for a return. She's no doubt the most underated Turtles character ever.
Well Venus got an action figure as well.I'm not sure if the toys were Laird's department. The Fast Forward series was heavilly influenced by toy merchandising I've heard
Mona is an awesome character and what a hot reptile she was, i had a major crush on her when i was 9 years old when that episode first appeared.
Boy i tell you, it's amazing how back then in the 80s and 90s they got away with making anthropomorphic animals hot. I mean you had Mona Lisa, Minerva Mink, Cleo from Heathcliff, Cheetara, Kit Mambo on Animalympics, M'ress on the Star Trek cartoon, Callie on Swat Kats, Felicia on Darkstalkers, Gadget on Rescue Rangers, Miss Kitty Mouse on The Great Mouse Detective, Aishia Clan Clan on Outlaw Star, Bimbette on Tiny Toon Adventures including Julie Bruin and especially Selina Kyle (aka Catwoman) in that Batman The Animated Series episode where she got turned into an ACTUAL Cat-Woman were all kinds of hot, ain't i right?
"You killed Captain Clown, YOU KILLED CAPTAIN CLOWN"-The Joker on Batman TAS

Gee, I wonder where furries come from. Maybe it has something to do with what's on TV.
Her figure wasn't isn't as cool as I'd hoped.
I don't really remember what her action figure looked like. I hadn't seen it in a while. I vaguely remember the description on the back though.

Her hair is different. It's green and she lacks a ponytail. The fins are new as well. The face looks like it did in the cartoon though. Speaking of weapons, I wonder if she would have ended up being a fighting character if she had returned. She probably would if she appeared in a new series.
Well, April came with a gun and ninja star. And Princess Mitsu form TMNT III came with a bow and arrow, and a sword, and an awsome claw thing. They just kinda messed up Mona Lisa. She comes with some poiso spray, or w/e, which is kinda neat, and like an electro prod, type thing. But, the nail file sai, and blow fish mace are pretty lame. And the sai in particular doesn't even fit in her hands properly.
Say uh FH, do you remember any of the girls i mentioned especially Miss Kitty on Great Mouse Detective (I saw that movie in theaters in it's 86 release when i was 5 about 4 times and had a crush on her) and that Batman TAS episode i mentioned?
"You killed Captain Clown, YOU KILLED CAPTAIN CLOWN"-The Joker on Batman TAS
I try not to be a perv when I'm on the boards, but of the characters you've mentioned, I will admit that I have been attracted to every one of them which I can remember.
Also, Tyger Tyger is my favorite episode of Batman The Animated Series. Not so much for it turning Catwoman into a literal cat woman, but because I like Island of Dr. Moreau-esque stories and I found Tyger to be a tragic figure in a subtle sort of way. But whether it was blond hair or blond fur, BTAS' Catwoman was always cute.
Heh. I missed it, but I have that episode saved on DVR. I still have 46 episodes of the series left to watch. I probably saw all of them when I was younger, but it's been a while.
They had a lot of episodes though. After that, DC went on to do cartoons like Justice League and Batman Beyond. It's not as if he had been forgotten about or was unpopular. BTAS was by far the best series of the bunch though.
Well, they had The New Batman Adventures in '97. The Hub considers them to be the same series, but this site lists them as two separate shows. After that, they had Batman Beyond in '99 and various Justice League series in the 2000s. So yeah, it's not like there was an absence of Batman.
And that's not including the different adaptations like The Batman.
It's hard to believe that it was back in 2009 that I first read that Nickelodeon had picked up TMNT. I gotta say, I'm very impressed with the series so far. I have a few complaints, but they're mostly minor. It's certainly my favorite series since the original cartoon. As for Mona Lisa herself, I'd like to see her back, but only if they keep her similar to the original. I wouldn't want to see some reimagining which completely alters her character or appearance. This new show seems pretty faithful to the original though, so maybe she'd get lucky in that regard.
I'm surprised to see that the show appears to be testing the waters on pairing Donatello with April. I mean, so far, it's just a one sided thing on his part, but I'm still surprised for a number of reasons. First off, I thought there was a rule against Turtles dating? Oh, well, I guess that wouldn't be the case if Raphael and Ninjara are a couple. Second, I'm surprised to see Don chasing after a human - especially April. Third, I can't help but feel the choice was deliberate. Donatello was the only one who never had a romantic interest in the first series and there were a lot of fan rumors about his sexuality. I can't help but feel like they went ahead and made him the one with the crush to go ahead and get it out of the way that he is heterosexual.
Then again, it's possible that they went with him simply because he's the nerdy one. It's easier to say that he's a nerd and she's out of his league than it is to address the fact that he's a mutant Turtle and she's a human being. I gotta say, I wasn't really sold on the idea at first, but I'm actually kinda warming up to it. I think the turning point was when that psychic scientist scoffed at Don about "You don't really think you have a chance with April, do you?" It just seemed so cold and made me really sympathize with the poor guy.
My thought exactly. Would like to see her back in the new series but I don't want to see her drastically alter. Though I wouldn't mind her being updated. Newer hair style maybe a little more definition to her body but yeah, they don't need to do much to her.
They need to bring back Venus, Mona Lisa, and create another mutant female, then have them all team up with Karai to form a female counterpart of the turtles.
I just watched the episode again. I can't believe that it's been more than four years since I've seen it last. I definitely feel that they should have brought her back for a couple more episodes. She was a fun one.
Totally agree that she should have been brought back for more episodes. The show needed a greater female presence as well as more diversity in villains, heroes and story lines. If the owners/creators hadn't put those restrictions on the show we could have had something a lot better than what we got. Who knows. Maybe the original show might have lasted a couple more years if the writers would have had more freedom. Even if there were controversies steming from mutant/different mutant and mutant/human love interests the publicity alone would have been good for the show as long as things never went too far. Now we'll never know.
