My granny, who grew up in southeast Texas in the late 1800s-early 1900s, hybridized it with the PC (at the time) term "negro", always saying "nigra". She wasn't a racist in any way. She liked and got along fine with the nigras, and taught me it wasn't nice to say "nigger".

I prefer the Agatha Christie novel
