I have been avidly watching this show on Cartoon Network (in the form of Case Closed--The names have been changed to protect the innocent...jerks, or xenophobic parents thereof, who cannot be bothered to remember Japanese names), and I really love the premise. However, I have a minor problem and I just want to see if I am alone in this sentiment. According to TV Tome, Detective Conan has roughly 333 episodes and 8 movies. Does anyone else think that that is just far too long to draw out a premise like this? Even if every episode represents one day in the life of Conan's ordeal, that seems like a pretty long time to be hiding out with his would-be girlfriend and her dingbat dad while trying to track down the syndicate who poisoned him. Can anyone tell me if there is anything to look forward to in future episodes with regard to the over-story? I know it is telling, but I have a sinking feeling Adult Swim will probably give up on the series before it gets anywhere.
adult swim probably didn't buy all of the episodes. so just like inuyasha, it would take forever to get anywhere close to the end.
my problem isn't the 333 eps., but the fact that they changed the names to english. since i am not an avid anime watcher, the ones i have seen have not changed the names. i heard the reason the names are english, is so they can be easy to remember. if so, they don't have a lot of faith in people. of the anime i do watch, i remember everyone's names with ease.
Even before Case Closed premiered on Cartoon Network, I was trying to get every bit of info on Detective Conan I could from the Internet (which was about the only source in the English-speaking world: even stores that stock Anime DVDs didn't carry Meitantei Conan - I still wonder why). I have come up with the following.
Although most episodes of the show are... well, episodic (stand-alone, could happen at any random time), once in awhile an episode is aired that has some plot development (Conan sees someone on a train that he recognizes as one of his poisoners, Richard Moore gets a lead on the "Men in Black Organization", etc.). These may be fewer and further between than the straight mysteries, but each of them progresses the plot and, as a result, moves the story a little closer to its conclusion. The following are some bits and pieces I have gotten from Internet sources.
VERY GENERAL DESCRIPTIONS OF FUTURE PLOT DEVELOPMENTS FOLLOW, BUT SOME MAY SEE THESE AS SPOILERS
A character is introduced later in the show with Japanese name of Ai (might be Anglicised to "Annie" or the like on CC.) She is a little girl Conan's age who enrolls in his grade school. It turns out she was a member of the Black Organization, in fact the one who invented the poison that Conan was forced to take. When Ai (real name, Shiho Miyano) betrayed the Organization, under threat of torture she took the poison herself and learned firsthand that it regresses instead of kills.
(Trivia bit: Members of the Black Organization have code names that are alcoholic beverages. The men who poisoned Conan were "Gin" and "Vodka". Shiho's name when she was part of it was "Sherry".)
There will be a future episode (if CN doesn't wimp out on us) in which Conan takes an experimental antidote and reappears as Jimmy Kudo. The effect will only be temporary, though.
In a future episode, a teacher will be introduced at Conan's school named Jody Santemillion. (Whaddaya know... a name they won't have to Anglicize!) Whether she is part of the Black Org or a foe of theirs I haven't been able to tell, but it is certain she knows more about Conan and his situation than an ordinary third party would know.
Well into the future of the show, episodes air in which... well, it's not revealed for certain, but is very, VERY strongly suggested that the Black Organization has figured out that little Conan is in fact teenaged Jimmy. (They became suspicious when no death notice for Jimmy Kudo appeared in the local paper.)
And I PRAY Cartoon Network leaves the show on long enough to introduce this character: At some point, Conan runs across a mysterious figure who bills himself as Keito Kid. Some call him Conan's arch-enemy, but others say that's not really accurate. What is accurate is the Black Organization did him dirty, and now he has his own agenda for bringing them down. Another accurate point is that he is very, very sharp - the only person in the series who can give Conan a run for his money in terms of being able to solve his crimes. And thirdly, his popularity in Japan and other countries that have aired the show rivals Conan's: There are probably as many Keito Kid fan clubs as there are Conan clubs. Creator Gosho Aoyama has gone on record to say Keito Kid is his favorite character in the series.
There is more - I haven't even mentioned Jimmy's West Japan counterpart Heiji Hattori (wonder how they'll Anglcize that?) or the fact that Jimmy Kudo's parents are introduced into the series - but I figure that's enough (maybe even too much) for now.
yeah, they've already mentioned the western counterpart, he looks exactly like jimmy, except he has darker skin (i guess they think cuz he's fromt the west he more tan) anyways i forgot his name ... it was in the two part episode where conan drinks somekinda drink and he can turn back to jimmy and then there's a murder case where it turns out the wife killed her husband cuz he's an evil bastard of a politician ^_^
anyways i think that's the most recent episode, Adultswim has started it over from the beginning...
Eric Bana is simply SEXY! Hugh Jackman is gorgeous!!! Harry Potter Rules the World!
Most of the episodes were only stand-alones until ep. 170 (or around). After that, every tidbit of Case Closed will become utterly important, since it has it's meaning until episode 345. Currently, the 373rd episode was passed, and it's still exciting, of course, mostly for those people who are watching it from the beginning. The only problem with the Anglicized names will come up only, when you will watch the 14th target (2nd movie), since every character (the original names) have significant numbers (japanese) in their names, you won't understand it. Sentences fabricated from animal's names, which altogether are pronounced as "eet me under the peach tree" or the names of summer months "You're pathetic" makes sense only in Japanese, which tells us, how much Aoyama is a genious. But, only in his own language, he himself defined his English knowledge as poor. All in all, fans of long-running animes might like Case Closed, since you can watch one episode a day for a year;)
adult swim sucks for the fact that they buy so few episodes of a show. although i can assume that buying cartoons isn't exactly cheap. i know buying the dvds isn't.
I thought we had already passed episode 40 cuz like "billionare blues" was in the 40 and 41 they have up to 50 so far so it says on the official case closed website
It's only funny until someone gets hurt... then it's hilarious
Not entirely true; adult swim "may" have ordered 40 episodes, but the company Funimation ordered 125 episode to be made. So even if it stops playing on cartoon network, the episodes will probably still be in production for DVD release, etc... So there is no need to worry about it ending anytime soon.
Ummm AS is a load. j/k. Although I can't complain that they air it (OMG i AM SOOOOO GLAD!!!!), I still wish that they had used the original names. You guys are right, however: like Inuyasha, they'll probably not air more than less than half the series. *goes off to cry*
Let's say we have 100 people aged from 6-23. 50 are avid anime fans and love when the names aren't changed, the other 50 hate anime, and are put off by hearing a character refer to "Yukiko" in a perfect English accent. They're trying to appeal to the broadest audience possible without changing the show so radically that it turns off the fans of the Japanese version.
As for why they only bought 40 episodes; they didn't know if the show would be as big a hit as it is in Japan. Most likely, they'll look over the ratings for the 40 episodes that they've aired, then decide whether or not it would be cost-effective to purchase more episodes from FUNimation. If it is, they'll probably order more, and ask FUNimation to order even more episodes to dub into English.
I just hope this happens soon. The curse of being an avid fan and not missing episodes is that you don't catch any you missed when they get re-run.
You guys are SURPRISED that they're already re-running episodes?! C'mon, if we learned anything from DBZ, its that CN will milk the hell out of any franchise it can.
Chris has it correct here. Remember the delay for DBZ? It stopped RIGHT AFTER Vegeta killed himself to stop Majinn Buu, then restarted TWO TIMES, before FINALLY, the epsiodes after came out on video. It took a year or 2 for CN to air the rest of the epsiodes. They do the same with all of the anime they get.
