Why, in the entire series, does Richard never get into any kind of trouble with Detective McGuire and/or any other cops for the way he treats Conan (i.e. constantly smacking him, throwing him, yelling at him to shut up whenever he does anything at a crime scene)? One would think that Richard would at least be questioned of his parental rights. Granted, Conan isn't his kid, but Richard's still the "legal guardian", and, as such, should not be allowed to treat a minor (at least "minor" in appearence with a teenage genius' mind) in such a harmful manner.

I think so since child abuse is a new thing in the U.S. and also, how old is Conan in the japanese version since 16 is like being 18 in Japan, however, he might be younger in the japanese version and there has been lots of changes in the dubbed.
Richard's "abuse" never seemed all that severe to me, more like a three stooges routine than anything else. Maguire probably just figured they were messing around, since Conan never gets anything serious, like a black eye.
True, but now (or at least in the 90's, where it was wrong to spank your kids)in american society, spanking a child for sometime he/she done can be considered "child abuse." Ths "child abuse" factor in this show can be seen along the same lines as "The Simpsons," but ppl can see that child abuse.
Furthermore, Richard hits Conan just for butting in or asking something, which can be seen harsh to some in america.
Yes, the child abuse factor can be seen as harsh to some of America but you have to remember, this show was not made for America. So maybe in Japan, hitting a child slightly for doing something they believe is wrong isn't really all that bad. Plus if you notice, the only time Richard really hits Conan is when Conan touches things at a crime scene or when he says something stupid to a potential suspect which could be classified under harrasment for the suspect. So sometimes Conan does do really stupid things (most likely because he forgets he is a kid) and should be punished. Not that I condone Richard's actions or anything.
"One day this world will cease to exist but I will continue on, for I am nothing"
yea and thats what is wrong with this country kids can do whatever the hell they want and parents can't do crap. No wonder this place is falling apart... punishing your kid for doing something wrong is considered BAD! -------------
dragoon, let's remember that punishment is not the same thing as abuse. a child can be disciplined and well behaved without being hit. in fact, the children I've seen that are spanked and hit by their parents are usually the MOST badly behaved kids. Learning *not* to hit someone just because they made you angry is *very* important, and there's no conceivable way spanking can teach a child that. also, spanked children often can't stand a timeout. they'd rather just have their butt sting for a minute and get on with their lives. it becomes like no big deal to them. which is evidence that time-out is more of a deterrent.
As far as Richard and Conan go, I totally agree that they're more like Homer and Bart. It's one of the surefire comedic elements of the show. I love it. It's not like Conan is learning anything from Richard, and he never gets any serious injuries as someone else mentioned. If Richard was hitting Rachel, that'd be a different issue.
to the person above me, ya how can u compare that? also ya this was originally in japan as most if not all animes r. there u can freaking beat ur kid with a stick and not many pp lwould care, well atleast in india, so i mguessing u cna in japan too
People don't care because it's an anime...sure, people may get pissy about violence and sex in GTA:SA, but nobody's going to care much about anime, because there are probably around 3 million different animes out there, and Japan's comin' up with new ones all the time.
To try and persecute every bad anime would take years and tons of paperwork...so people let sleeping dogs lie in this case.
"The War...has begun." -Kukua Oherron, Chronicles of Light (2006)
That's NOT abuse. Abuse is taking a belt to a kid or getting drunk and beating them into the ER.
In most of the rest of the world, this is considered 'Reasonable Chastisement'. Countries like Britain even have laws specifically permitting this level of disapline (they forbid striking that would leave a bruise or striking with an implement, which is a bit too far).
Take a close look, Conan isn't mental or physically harmed in any way. If it were abuse, it would have harmed him.
Children need disipline and boundries, and parents need to enforce them. If you take away a tool like a raised voice of a mild slap, then you hamstring parent when it comes to dealing with disrespectful, unruely, or disobedient children. And, as we all know, the disrespectful, unruely, or disobedient children of today have a nasty of turning into the thugs, bullies and murderers of tomorrow.
If you consider this abuse, its no wonder your society is falling apart and your country is full of crack head kids, gangs and drugs.
Hes funny. lol. LIke I dont hate him but I think hes ok. I like Conan and the others better. But yea, Conan getting a punch to the head proably can be considered abuse but as long as he doesnt break a bone or give him bruses or black eyes and stuff, its probably ok.

I wonder if you've even watched the show. Conan is not hit for being a brat, he's hit because Richard Moore is the one who has the brain of a seven year old and Conan has a brain so superior who could compete? Richard just gets upset and hits him whenever he feels like it. How can you feel sorry for Richard Moore and view Conan Edogawa as a delinquent? Wake Up!
Well here's a serious question. How the hell can you sympathise with Richard Moore? He's a total screw up and Conan is the best thing to happen to him and Rachael.
The fact that I'm human means that I can easily sympathises with a man who has few natural tallents and suddenly finds himself up against a genuius who shows up, distrupts his life, then makes him look foolish at every turn.
It's not just Conan that makes him look bad. Other people have done it many times. Mitch, Amy, and George could outwit him. This genius showed up because he was poisoned and shrunken. Rachel fell in love with him and Conan got lucky to live with her. At the beginning Richard was happy to have the kid around. I don't see how it's Conan's fault that Richard does stupid things on impulse. As for Conan being against Richard HA! Conan leaves everyone convinced that Richard is solving the cases. Conan does not get in Richard's way when Richard is binge drinking and hitting on women.
Really it's the other way around. Richard gives Conan the headaches by screwing off and punching him whenever Conan gets two seconds of attention.
You must have been watching a cut version or something (the fact that you're using his name from the English version is a bit of a givaway for a start).
I know that it's not Connan's fault that Richard jumps to conclusions or does goofy things, but I've seen Connan back chat Richard about a million time, I've seen him get in the way when he's flirting, and I've seen him humiliate Richard by rushing into a crime scene etc and starting poking everything (as the 'responsible abult' it's Richard's job to keep Connan under control, and when he can't Richard looses face). When richard grabs him and drags him away, it's not because he's angry, it's because he's embarrased.
Besides, Connan only lets Richard take the credit because it helps him remain hidden. He doesn't do it out of the good of his heart. If he could take credit, he probably would.
Richard deserves the back talk and the attitude 100 percent. If not for Conan Richard would have no paychecks.

I have researched information on Japanese and uncut versions and I've yet to find anything that calls for sympathy for Defective Moore.
OH BTW that f where the t should be is no accident.
You're treating Conan as if he were Jimmy. Remember, the he sees Conan as just being a kid and gets annoyed when he steps out of kid mode and 'interferes' with his business.
Look at all the times that Conan has tripped over something, spilled something or messed something up on purpose just to get the guys attention. We know that it's in his best interest that Conan does these things, be he doesn't know that. So he gets frustrated and annoyed.
"I've yet to find anything that calls for sympathy for De 'T' ective Moore."
One such person right here, you-hooo, Howdy ya'll.
Was the anime on AS edited or sumthin? What was takin out of it? There was cursin and blood, what else was in there. Usually AS keeps it all uncut. Can u tell me what else they take out? Thanx

First of all child discipline is not even an issue here. The issue here is that because Conan is so brilliant that old man Moore gets mad and hits him. Conan is great and Richard Moore is a drunk that wants to sleep with every cheap fluzy in town.
I don't see Conan as Jimmy even though we know he once was. I do see Conan as a 7 year old with the mind of a 50 year old law professor yet the compassion of a seven year old. This child prodigy outdoes not only Richard Moore but Harley Hartwell and Inspector McGuire.
He became smaller but as he said "it only sharpened my phisique."
Now that I've explained how child discipline isn't relevant and even it was Conan has great discipline. He can go on four hours sleep and he's damn quick. He behaves in a very upstanding manner.
I'm going to now explain where you're wrong again.
<<<<Just because some trigger-happy Americans can't see that this is a form of disciplining, it doesn't mean that it isn't. A child is hit in the head (well deserved because an adult sees a small kid messing with CRIMINAL EVIDENCE) and they shout "CHILD ABUSE! ARREST THAT ABUSER!">>>>
Conan does no mess around at crime scenes. Richard is the one who screws around. If Conan didn't "mess" with the evidence many more crime scenes would go unsolved like they did when Richard was on the force.
Conan is a great kid who does wonderful things and he gets hit because Richard is a jerk-off not because Conan is a brat. Open your eyes!
With Americans like you it's no wonder the Japanese are beating us academically.
Mori Kogoro (his original name) is the man in the eyes of those cops (ever since he became the "Sleeping" Kogoro). They probably wouldn't mess with him. Besides, I think they'd have done the same if some kid is messing around their crime scene, especially a serious one like murder.
Kogoro has never hurt Conan in such a way that the pain would last beyond five seconds. The most he's done is give him the comic relief anime bump, which goes away in the next shot. Anyway, it's been shown that Kogoro does care about Conan, just in his own way. He's gotten upset about Conan putting himself in danger and in the first movie, when he heard that Shinichi had "asked" Conan to help (Resulting in Conan being in the way of a bomb and hospitalized), he became angry and threatened Shinichi (Of course, Kogoro has no idea that Shinichi and Conan are the same person, just like most of the characters.).
Anyway, if you want child abuse, watch episode 263 where Hattori's father actually punches him (Hattori, not Conan) and makes his lip bleed. Even Kogoro said he had gone too far.
- Monkey Fist: What kind of hero brings a baby on a mission?
You indeed have a point, but this juvenile anime isn't exactly the finest example of great writing and reasonable character actions. I mean camon, the police force accepts children hanging around on a crime scene.
