I used to like this show but after watching the 2009 special I really hope they do not make anymore. It was dreadful, Cash and Ahearn should have taken a tip from John Cleese and Ricky Gervaise and stopped while they were in front.
The script was so awful I was embarrassed for the BBC who should be giving new talent a break. The actors deserved more but the BBC seem to allow the big names make rubbish.

Don't be ridiculous, it is not a fact. It is your OPINION. One that is not shared by many.
The Queen of Sheba was a return for the show after several years absence, and everyone loves it. So that blows your theory out of the water. The later two specials are disliked for the simple reason that people think they're bad, unfunny, and generally lack any of the charm the show had.
Simple as that.

None of the specials compare to the first three series, yet any episode of The Royle Family is still far better than most comedys churned out these days.

Exactly, so any extra episodes which we get are basically extra treats, fair enough whether they are as good as the old episodes is up for debate but if you don't like them then simply ignore them and view series 3 as the end of the whole canon, simple as

The only good special was The Queen of Sheba. I thought that was just as good as the old series.
