Just pure genuis

One of my favourite British programmes of all time. How is it possible a programme can make you laugh and cry together?

For me its the subtly of the show. Little looks that the family exchange together, baby Davids christening and how the family all were. When they are singing and dancing in their modest living room I think I cry the most! Such a normal, working class family that we can all relate to. At least I can because this is my family! I grew up in a house exactly like that (in greater London though not greater Manchester)my dad IS Jim Royle. Everything about him, Anthony is my brother and my dad always had a mate like twiggy.

The programme is just pure perfection, I adore it - Just wanted to get that out there!

Have to say Im not keen on the xmas specials so far though, they havent dont it for me for some reason.

"What, you don't like rice? Tell me Michael, how could a billion Chinese people be wrong?"

Most people are not keen on the Christmas specials. The Golden Egg Cup was the worst one they did. There's hardly a genuine funny moment in the whole episode. The New Sofa had some good moments, but overall it fell flat. The one last year was almost as bad as The Golden Egg Cup.

I mean when they rely on so called comedy like Jim and Anthony carrying Jim to the toilet, and Mary's ashes being vacuumed into Barbara's Dyson, you know the show is past it's sell by date. Compare that to the simple but effective comedy of the first three seasons when they did their comedy through natural dialogue and not corny comedy antics like this.
