Pat Healy should have been with Mary.

Pat was the only one who genuinely fell for Mary. He fell for Mary while getting to know her, albeit as part of his job.
For Ted Mary was just a high school crush. Hiring a private investigator to stalk her 13 years later is beyond creepy.
For Woogie, Mary was the ex girlfriend he couldn't move past.
For Norm, she was that woman who was way out of his league.
For Bret, things just couldn't work out so they parted with dignity.
Pat is the only person who didn't cross the line when wooing Mary. Therefore, he deserved to be with her, not Ted. Ted really was the biggest stalker of them all.

"Pat is the only person who didn't cross the line when wooing Mary"

So watching her thru her window with binoculars, lying to her about his true identity and stalking her after his private eye job had ended is not crossing the line?

Wow.

reply

Okay, so he did inch across the line. Nevertheless, his tactics were less creepy than everyone else's.

reply

He did more than inch across the line. He obliterated the line. Sure, he was a private investigator and at first, was doing his job but he went beyond that. He was the worst of them all.

By that metric everyone here would be considered a stalker. Who hasn't gone on Facebook and looked up an old flame? Hiring a pro goes beyond a web search but it's not really stalking.

That was kind of the joke though. Ted hiring someone to look her up and see if she was involved with someone isn't stalking, but everyone accused him of it and each other. It was just an innocent way of finding her again. Norm was the real stalker. He pretended to be someone else in order to befriend Mary directly and gain her confidence without her knowing who he was.

I've just said something similar in another thread - and the irony is that if Ted had done nothing, he'd have found out a few weeks later from his school friend Bob that Mary had a surgery in Miami anyway.
Then again, had things played out any other way, Tucker would have sabotaged his efforts - that's the beauty of this story.

I disagree. He laughed just a little too hard when the vibrator remark was made...

Frankly Pat was a no good stinking jerk for spying on Mary in her underwear and lying to Ted just so he could get with Mary.
