conveniently placed big trap?

where the hell did that big ass trap come from? who has a trap that big set up just left there in the middle of the floor. convenient for the movie makers is suppose.

reply

It's very clear that Boyd sets up the trap himself and leads Ives into it...

Yeah, I had to roll my eyes at that one. Like a dinosaur or elephant trap in an old barn. I had that sort of imagination when I was like 7.

reply

didn't you notice when he went in there moments before and discovered that insanely huge trap that was being stored there among others? He had it set up before he led him in there.

reply

And yes, normally it is used for dinosaurs

reply

You need to rewatch that part. Boyd is looking for Ives and he hears the bell ringing outside. He runs out and sees that Ives might have gone into the barn. When he's in there, he doesn't find Ives but he sees the bigass bear trap. He sets up a trap just in case he would need it.

Listen! Do you smell something?

reply

Yes I understand he had time to set it up...I am just pointing out that the trap is too big for any living creature on Earth!!! Hence..."convenient"

reply

Not only that, the trap closes on top of him, the guy on the bottom is cushioned from everything. There is no way he'd die from that.

reply

Ives lands on the bottom teeth of the trap, so perhaps his spine is severed when Boyd throws himself onto him and bangs his head on the bait plate to spring the trap. Maybe not all that convincing from a trauma surgeon's point of view, but as a final scene to a horror movie, a satisfying tableau.

reply

he got injured by the bottom teeth of the trap .. but as an orthopedic surgeon and judging by the length and sharpness of the trap teeth shown he would get some minor (but never fatal) spinal injury.. also take into consideration that it was a low energy and low velocity trauma and he had superhuman strength.. am much disappointed by the end .. but i enjoyed the movie.

reply

He didn't die from a spinal injury; they both died from being trapped and bleeding out. After that insanely long and bloody battle, any "superhuman strength" has been long since drained from them. That's why Ives is hoping to eat Boyd once he dies, so he can gain more strength to get out of the trap.

The tap is realistic in size for bear head traps in the day.
Boyd makes a very conscious and obvious discovery of them while searching for Ives.
There is a discernible gap in Boyd's exit after discovery. His setting and placing of the trap.
Each party got 50% of the traps teeth on their respective side of the traps jaws.
Each party was terminal from the preceding fight prior to being caught in the trap.
Boyd's enhanced strength would have overcome the two-man requirement to set a bear trap of that size.

What every body else here said, also symbolism: they'd both become beasts.
