Underrated for what it is - a movie.

I can't believe all the freaking out about how corny it was and of course "but the real Patch Adams didn't like it!".

Boo freaking hoo. It was a movie done for entertainment and, if you have even a tiny piece of non-cynical heart left, left you with a little bit of a "feel good" feeling. Maybe it made you want to help people, or possibly at the very least, just be a bit nicer to people overall in your day to day interactions.

Yeah, it was sappy and over the top. No, it wasn't the greatest movie ever made. And no, supposedly it's not incredibly accurate as far as the "real" story is concerned. Who cares. Repeat after me: It's a movie. Personally, I was entertained.

not sure what your point is. yes it's a movie. there are good and bad movies. patch adams isn't a very good movie. just because it aims to be uplifting and inspirational doesn't give it a free pass.

I just watched it last night for the first time, in honour of Robin Williams' passing. Found a great comment online somewhere, specifically that the movie was "hated by critics and loved by people who don't care about critics." Yes, it was a bit sappy, and it wasn't Williams' most complex movie, but hey... I've always believed in the healing power of laughter, so it resonated with me. Very enjoyable.
