By hippies, I'm talking dudes with long hair. They were in abundance back then, and some might not have even considered themselves hippies but they looked the part.
But they were NO where to be found in this movie. Not even volunteering or even building Patch's clinic. I don't even think there was anyone with shaggy hair. Just the odd side burns here and there.
don't be silly, there are no hippies in medical schools.

They were working on the fish-out-of-water story type, so if Patch looked conservative in comparison to young hippies, it wouldn't have worked. So they made people look conservative and dressed Patch in louder clothes.
