So, deduct your own conclusion from that little morsel of information. Would imply that perhaps the buddy of his that got murdered was still a love interest, and the facts were altered for the movie because his sexual orientation needed to intentionally be downplayed, in order to make sure that the actual story was payed closer attention to and the movie didn't become a story about overcoming adversity about his sexual orientation, and it stayed on point, and about the story of how patch became a good, caring, and amazing Doctor. His sexual orientation was unimportant for storytelling purposes, so they left out this piece. Nowadays it wouldn't be such a forgivable omission, but back then overlooking something like that was more commonplace than people realize probably. In this case though they were probably right to do it. Nowadays if they were to do a Patch Adams Remake, they absolutely would make his love interest male, and they would create an entirely new plot where he was constantly having to hide his sexual preference and identity, and was constantly having to overcome people's bigotry and hate, and the original message would have become diluted and not nearly as powerful in a singular moral format.
