Other cultures and teen flicks

So, I just had a conversation with my friend Aya(a native of Osaka, Japan), and when she first came here she always used to want to come over to my appt because I live a few blocks from a high school. She was fascinated by it, and had seen movies like CHW when she was still overseas. Now, the impression she had was that all high schools in the US are like what she sees. And unfortunately, they are not.
It's strange how we project the awesome we think we can be as a culture into movies. And even stranger how foreigners view it, eh?

Yeah, I used to believe it too. It's because they take the stereotypes and magnify it to near comic proportions, and its initial success meant it was constantly used and became the standard for teen flicks. I mean if American directors portray American teen culture in this way, you would think there would be some degree of truth reflected in there. So you can't blame people for thinking it really is that way!

I have lived in the USA all my life and can say with all honesty that I have been to many parties like the one depicted in the movie, however the cops usually show up much earlier in real life, drunk teens get into fights over stupid stuff, neighbors call u in,etc. etc. and they all end up getting into so much trouble it sets them straight. At least untill college, then it happens all over again with law trouble. Jail, even nice clean american jail will make you think twice about this behavior on such a grand scale. As you get older you tend to reduce the number of ppl invited or welcome, but we still all drink to excess throughout our 20s where I live. Party on! It is the American way.

I'm not an American and I've never been to America but I've never really believed that something like this happens all the time and everywhere... I mean I also had a wild graduation party, the cops came, we were dancing and partying and I dot remember half of it because of vodka I took in but movies like that are exaggerations and they'll always be like that... In reality maybe some such parties reach about 80% of craziness depicted in these movies but i don't believe that the majority of parties are like that... not talking about this movie specifically but lesbians kissing and *beep* each other, the nerd getting it on with two chicks, the cool dudes and miss popularities being like kings and queens. Maybe it exists in America somewhere but I remember that it wasn't as clear cut in my school, that nerd and cool people relationships... We were mostly doing all the things together, sure some like to party real hard and there were girls some'd never dream to go near and express your feelings like it was with Preston but it wasn't like people were divided in some clear cut groups and not all of the stunning babes were even the most popular girls in the school
