IS it ever explained (or implied) where these creatures come from? I remember a scene in the beginning that showed a man with cards with the creatures faces on them.

I read it was another dimension that was accessed through a portal in the back of the van, there was a theory that they were the worst killers from across time but that's not definite, I've read a lot about this film and apparently there was 30mins cut from the final movie so whether that would have shed any light on the unanswered questions I don't know, as for the cards in the skull, pretty weird tbh, don't know how they fit in or why the monsters would pose for them, maybe the hoped the movie would spawn merchandise and they could be used as some kind of trading cards who knows, wonder where they are today.
