Look how Lee is when he sees her at the premiere. He's sick of it and had really gotten over her. She had to make the move, and swallow every ounce of pride. Most women, especially that attractive, just won't do that, for any guy. That's where he "sells out a little", lol, as he says at the end. The real ending should have been when he wrote her the letter, and she decides to stop waiting on his call and go out with her friend. That's reality.
