Why was this guy so famous?

Ok, I watched this film with some times ago, not knowing anything about this Andy Kaufman, since is not famous here in Italy; so, I don't want to offend, but I wonder: what was so special about this guy?

I mean: his "comicity" (???) didn't make laugh, he couldn't do anything but insulting people, his disguises were horrible...

To make a comparison, I'd compare it to another film I watched, "Lenny": that guy and what he said was more "understandable" to me

Great Jim Carrey, and great Dustin Hoffmann, though

your post is a perfect example of WHY he was famous. he was famous for his actions...the controversay he created, was he funny or wasn't he? was he just pretending to be a prick or was he really? he entertained some of his audience, confused some and insuted even more.

whether you love him or hate him, he was one of a kind. history appreciates that.

Andy Kaufman was only famous and known in the USA belive me.

I am old enough to remember the 1970s and 80s very well, and belive me, during that time period we saw nothing of Andy other than what was shown on UK tv through the Taxi series. We saw nothing of the Solo work, stand up work we saw in this movie. He just was not known over here through the UK media.

If you were to ask most people in the UK who Andy Kaufman was back then, and to this day, a lot of people would say " who the hell is he ? "

Maybe people would just think, " oh, it's that R.E.M song ? " lol.

Yep. I asked my parents if that heard of him and they hadn't. I wondered if they would like him and I have to assume they would, because we had people like Les Dawson and stuff which wasn't a million miles away from being similar to Andy Kauffman. I think there were a few Brits that were doing a similar kind of thing to Kauffman.
