Biopics: Why bother?
Some spoilers...
This was shown at the end of the credits:
While this picture is based upon a true story, some characters have been composited or invented, and a number of incidents fictionlized
This is the second biopic I've seen in a week (The other being about Betty Page) and both of them were a dissapointment. Why make a movie about someone who really existed, and change what actually happened to that person in real life? Why not present the facts? Is it because maybe, there are certain things the film-makers find uncomfortable to deal with, so they're left out? But then, that defeats the purpose of the film, in my view. That's why, in general, I don't like these biopic movies, as often, you don't learn much about the person being depicted; Kaufman's childhood is just skipped over, for instance. It would've been better if we saw what inspired his 'madness'. Did he really sing the same song in the clubs and bars, as he did as a child to his friends? This could explain why his comedy was so hit and miss. You can guess that I wasn't a fan. Latka, I did not find funny either. and the best thing about Taxi, IMHO, was Bob James' music! And the use of the people involved, like Marilu Henner and co. in the scenes of filming Taxi, etc. I found to be very self indulgent. Its almost as though Jim Carrey wanted to make the movie with them, and some how live Kaufman's life for a while, as he considered him to be a genius.
At the end, we see the cast of Taxi, at Kaufman's funeral, smiling benignly. They all hated the guy, according to this website: http://www.findadeath.com/Deceased/k/Andy%20Kauffman/andy_kaufman.htm
One thing that I did find funny; *beep* *beep* My Line. *beep* LOL!
"Sitcoms are the lowest form of entertainment."
I wholeheartedly agree!! With a few exceptions.
A comic genius in my view, is someone like Bill Hicks. Someone who made people think, why are we sending men to the moon, while there are men on Earth, sleeping on the streets?
