Kenneth Mars - Tony Clifton ??

I just saw this movie for the first time yesterday, never bothered to watch it before this because to be honest I never found Andy Kaufman funny or entertaining or even interesting. As someone writing a movie revue on this page said so well; "his genius always eluded me". He always struck me as a mediocre performer with some really bad wiring in his head. My opinion...

Be that as it may, the movie was ok, and Jim Carey nailed the role. I thought Courtney Love was great, and looked great, something that seems to elude her these days.

Am I the only one though that thought Tony Clifton was a dead ringer for the character actor Kenneth Mars? I can't recall if I thought that back in the day because I don't really remember seeing Tony Clifton other than on Taxi, but in this movie I actually thought at first that Tony Clifton was being played by Mars, who just passed away recently btw.

For those of you who don't know who Mars was, his most memorable role was probably as the police inspector with the wooden arm in "Young Frankenstein".

Maybe Kaufman modeled Tony Clifton after him or they were friends or something, as I said, I was never a Kaufman fan so I didn't really pay attention to his career...but the resemblance was striking.

I see no resemblance. Nothing I've read on Kaufman mentions Mars as an inspiration for the Clifton character.

btw- any footage that Andy filmed as Tony Clifton on Taxi never aired, so you couldn't have seen the Tony Clifton character on Taxi.

Well I see a very strong resemblance, wherever I saw Tony Clifton. Or possily I'm comparing Carey's Tony Clifton to Mars, that may be it.

And I was just thowing it out there...no need for the snippy response.

I just watched the film on HBO and thought of Mars when I saw Clifton, so you are not alone.
