I read online that there are actually some cast members from "Taxi" who did not go to his real funeral in 1984, but who appeared in the funeral scene in "Man On The Moon."
That is unbelievably cheap and classless, if that is true. I'd be very interested in hearing their logic regarding their decision to do that.
Does anybody know who from the "Taxi" cast was really there and who wasn't?
You do however realize who you are actually talking about right?
If anything, this actually would have been hilarious in his mind, wich is why I think it was done in this way. Still Andy and a movie about him we are talking about.
Bear in mind that the cast of Taxi hardly knew Andy personally... because Andy had made a deliberate point of isolating himself. You don't even know if the other cast members knew about the funeral (was it even publicized?). Why the cast members appeared in the movie funeral... who knows. Perhaps it was their way of showing that they would have attended if they could.

Very true. He probably just did his work and went home, usually. We all work (or have worked) with people like that. We get along fine with them when we're working together, but there's no friendship outside the workplace. Not only that, but Andy was pretty much like a "part-time" employee. So to only see someone in a work setting a couple times a week for a few years, keeping the conversation only cordial and polite when you DO see them... and then hearing the person died a little over a year after you've stopped working together... during which time you probably haven't given each other two thoughts... well... ?? I guess I can see where the idea going to the funeral for some of the cast members may have seemed a bit awkward.
On further reflection, the film was hardly true to life in ANY way, anyhow. Not even the way they described Lynne and Andy's meeting was accurate. (I would've LOVED a re-enactment of Breakfast With Blassie, but nope. I guess that wasn't "exciting" enough.) So I guess it was no biggie that the cast members who weren't actually at the funeral be allowed into the scene. Maybe it was a little like closure for them too. And I'm sure Andy wouldn't have minded.
I have to wonder if Tony Danza doesn't regret taking part in the movie. It may have been theraputic. I wonder his real reasons... is he still that angry at Andy? Does he just not get the humor of what happened, and just feels it's too negative an experience to re-live? Interesting to speculate.

Why? Did Tony Danza & Andy Kaufman not get along while they were shooting Taxi together? What did Kaufman do to Tony Danza to get him angry at him?

If that's true, that's tacky...not only that some of them didn't attend Andy's funeral IRL, but that the movie depicted people being there that weren't.
Yes, but Isaac, the funeral scene was definitely a fantasy sequence. I also doubt there was a sing along, as depicted in the film! I think the film makers were trying to capture the spirit of Andy and how he might have liked for his funeral to be arranged. YR
According to the materials I've read there was a sing-a-long at Andy's funeral and it was very much as depicted in the movie. Not sure why it would be considered a “fantasy sequence”.
Some people who worked on the film (like Bob Zumda) were at Andy's funeral.
Danny Devito did an interview that's in the DVD extras and he said he was at his funeral and they did in fact do a sing along, so apparenty that scene in the film was accurately portrayed.
I remember reading somewhere that Marilu Henner attended, and that she herself thought Andy was faking it so she touched his body to be sure. It may have been in her autobiography that I read that...I can't remember.
I don't think it's cheap and classless at all. Maybe at the time they couldn't get to the real funeral, and this was their way of making up for it/giving tribute.
Also, it's possible some were angry with Andy at the time, or didn't have strong feelings regarding him. Then as time went on their feelings softened and perhaps began to appreciate what a unique individual he was.
I'm a couple of months late here, but I just watched it last night for the first time in many years. IIRC, from "Taxi," they showed Marilu, possibly Jeff Conaway (I can't remember for some reason), and definitely a very distraught Carol Kane. (She might have been sitting by Jeff.)
Now, as far as who among the "Taxi" cast was REALLY there at the actual funeral, I'm not sure, other than the aforementioned-by-others-and-mentioned-on-DVD Danny DeVito.
