One of the best performances not to be nominated for an Oscar?

I don't want to talk in hyperbole here - but there can't be many others as good as Carrey to have not even been acknowledged by the Academy.

Very true, this is proof, if needed, that comedy performances are criminally overlooked by the Academy in preference to dramatic roles. Yes it was a niche film about a non-mainstream xomedy performer but Carreys performance was spot on, he acted his heart out and its all there on the screen....perfectly encapsulating Andy.....funny, annoying, childlike and at times tragic. The golden globes recognised what a tour de force performance it was but not the overly political Oscars, it has to be one of the worst decisions in movie history not to have given him an Oscar.

The top of that list for me is Jim Carrey for 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.'
Also up there is Jim Carrey for 'The Truman Show.'

I think it goes beyond the academy not wanting to recognise comedy, to me it feels like they don't want to admit that a comedian can act better than serious actors. They will nominate serious actors who do comedy well but seem reluctant to say that the guy who played Ace Ventura is a great actor.

This is a biopic too, the academy LOVE biopics!

OP, agreed. Reese Witherspoon's turn as Tracy Flick in Election is on that list somewhere as well.
