This was a mistake. Carrey is barely tolerable as those cartoon characters he usually plays, but to play Andy Kaufmann, sorry, you needed a REAL actor. Most of the time he looked as if he had no clue as to what Kaufman did or how he moved or sounded like.
Wake up. Smell the coffee. Jim Carrey is a REAL actor. Whether you appreciate it or not. I don't anyone had the qualifications to play Andy Kaufman as well as he did. What the hell were you smoking? This is a brilliant performance. Should've won an Academy, instead here we are with people differing in views over it.
Such divergence of opinion bespeaks some truth to what I have posited: Jim Carrey SUCKED. If that were not the case, not so many people would be agreeing with me.
Those who LUV Carrey, will, of course, LUV everything he does, and will lack the true discernment of a film lover. You guys are fans! That's great, go enjoy. But please, leave the critical thinking to real cinemaphiles.
Academy Award? For what? There is no category, "Most Over Acted Performance By An Actor," or, "Least Researched Performance."
You think it's hard to imitate Kaufman? He barely tried. And if he's such a phenom why didn't he at least try?
I'm a Jim Carey fan but I don't love everything he's ever done. To claim he's my a real actor would suggest you've never seen Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
As for his performance in Man on the Moon, I can't think of another actor who would have been better for the part. I really don't know where you're coming from with your assumption that he didn't try.
You couldn't be more wrong. That WAS Andy Kaufman!!! Jim Carrey literally became Andy Kaufman, there is no actor alive or dead that could have done a better job with that role. Not even Kaufman himself had the range to give a performance like that. Truly deserved to win the golden globe that year!
Nicolas Cage and Edward Norton - who worked with Milos Foreman on The People vs. Larry Flynt - were both considered for the role. Either of them probably would've been better.
