If Tony Clifton IS Andy Kaufman, then who...

...was that nasty old douche who barged into that press conference and attacked Jim Carrey, calling him "Drew Carrey" before spray painting the place, pulling out his nasty schlong and peeing all over the place. Was that Kaufman protesting the movie? Or was that some bitter old washed up turd who used to work with Kaufman? Whoever it was, he was a real class act! *sarcasm

Andy Kaufman was the original Tony Clifton. The role lives on through his friend and writing partner Bob Zmuda.

Zmuda explains his reasoning for the incident you described in his book “Andy Kaufman: The Truth, Finally".

What, you thought I was being serious? 

It was his friend and writer, Bob Zmuda. He did it because while making Man on the Moon, Jim pissed off Zmuda and it was his way to get back at him. Zmuda has done Clifton before Andy died. that was part of the joke. Everyone thought it was Andy, and it was Zmuda. Bob explains why he did it. and I can understand. Jim was kind of a dick.
