Okay...all the Vanilla Sky connections make sense...
...but nobody made any parallels to Total Recall?

There are some parallels but this is much more psychological. In Total Recall we know from the beginning that the main character may be dreaming, we're just not sure if/when he has woken up. In Abre Los Ojos we don't know what's going on until the very end. The movie is much more suspenseful that way. I was on the edge of my seat throughout this film trying to figure out what was going on, and constantly being hit with surprise after surprise. It was like a really cool Twilight Zone episode.
