Why didn't he go back....? (spoilers)

I really enjoyed this movie, as I really enjoyed Vanilla Sky. But one thing has always bothered me: If you could just pick the day to start over from, why didn't he have his memory wiped back to right after he first met Sofia? It seems like that would be the better time to have your memories start from than starting them after he got into the accident and became all disfigured and had that awful situation at the club. He could have completely forgotten about the accident. Why not do that?

As Nuria wouldn't be dead then (in his mind), she could appear in his dream and destroy it anyway.

It wasn't him--he had died. Re-watch the ending if you have to. The corporate guy explained what they did and it was clear that they made the decision.

There is a joy to overcoming adversity. She is there when he wakes up and is still disfigured, therefore loving him for more than his looks. He overcomes this terrible accident and is repaired.

Also, by choosing this point he never erases and rewrites history, leaving his real memories of her intact. He creates new history over a time when he didn't see Sophia and he was a shut in.
