The movie never stated they took the baseball card as currency. The clerk said she needed to see a card, and Adam thought she meant a baseball card. Adam had plenty of money with him to pay for a hotel room. Remember, the whole reason he went into the baseball card shop was to get change because he had nothing but $100 bills.
