did this movie come out too early?

this movie wasn't that big of a success. but nowadays, movies that have come out after this one like a Saw, Hostel, Wolf Creek, etc. made tons of cash and seemed to blow up the horror/torture sub-genre (at least for now, I think it has finally slowed down). it seemed that if this movie had come out maybe 6 or 7 years later, it would have been talked about more.

Completely agree.

Also, Howdy was preachy to victims and reminded me a bit of Jigsaw.

plus he was picking up kids in a chat room to be his victims, much more of a modern day plot then it was back in 98

The second half of the film was pretty terrible, if he had come up with a better 3rd act it might have been more popular.

Perhaps.

If it came out a bit later and showcased a bit more of the torture on screen it could have became a bigger hit than it was.
