Gene Roddenberry had the idea of the main character dying and being used a plot device for a larger story. However, since he wasn't really guiding the series it is unsure how it would have developed. But yes he was meant to die in season 1 or early on in the series from what I understand.
shareThis is just not true. In fact, the original ending for the first season was altered when Kevin Kilner was confirmed as not returning. The first airing of it didn't show him dying, only floating in a "healing tank".
It basically came down to money. They didn't want a "star" of the show, they tried to make it like ST:TNG... an ensemble cast.
It didn't work. Post Season 1 went down quicker than Lindsey Lohan at closing time.
From what little I heard about this series, every time someone left it seemed to revolve around money with just a handful of actors surviving including Da'an, Zo'or, and Sandoval! ;-)

Seemed to me like they were flying by the seat of their pants with no clue at all as to where they wanted to go with the story. And it showed. The story went nowhere at all.
