Maxie the dog

I think this is a repeat episode, but I am watching it now for the first time. I find it interesting that Judge Milian made a statement about how it doesn't matter what's the best for the dog, because the dog is property. And she specifically said something like we're NOT going to have you both call for the dog and see who he goes to ... which is exactly what Judge Judy did once in an episode.

I don't know if anyone else saw it, but someone found a missing dog and kept it as their own. The original owners ended up suing them, but Judge Judy let the dog pick its owners, and he picked the new ones. The little boy from the original family started crying in court and it was really hard to watch. I always wondered if that was the right thing to do.

I remember that episode, and while the results could be heartwarming or heart breaking, Judy makes up her own rules.

Under the law, I believe Milian is correct: Pets are property -- and the courts aren't in the business of deciding "custody" based on where the animal might be happier or better cared-for.

It's just not their realm.

Yeah, that's definitely true, and it's why I prefer The People's Court. I've actually learned a lot from watching it over the years, especially when it comes to tenant's rights.

I agree.

Milian takes the time to explain the point of law in deciding a case. She even apologizes if she feels a litigant had been truly wronged, but she has to follow the law.

Judy decides cases on her moods -- and she's often inconsistent.
