'Up and down but not across'?

In the scene when Daniel first meets Carla's parents, right before the halloween dance, what is the thing that Radley gives Daniel?
Carla: My dad gives these instead of candy!
Daniel: Up and down, but not across.

What was the thing he gave him? Thanks

Hahahaha...great question.

I missed that too. Makes perfect sense, though, now.

I thought her dad seemed like a very cool fellow, if a bit of a drinker...

How can a dentist make so much money?

reply

^I agree I sort of found it weird that her dad was a dentist and it seemed like they had tons of money. But in the country club scene one of the women mentioned that Radley's dad built the country club maybe his dad was filthy rich and Radley has a lot from inheritance or investments and it is combined with his salary as a dentist. There are some areas where dentists don't make tons of money and maybe Radley's practice was focused more on wealthy patients. My friend's stepdad is a dentist that works in rural areas in New Mexico and he only over a 100,000 a year. I guess it comes down to location but Radley came from wealth it sorts make sense that they had a lot of money.

I don't know a single dentist in my area that isn't filthy rich ... I think this may depend on where they live.

Chris rock said that his house is worth millions of dollars and he is one of only 3 black people that live in his neighborhood. The other two people are Mary J blige, one of RNBs biggest and best stars IN THE WORLD, and Jay-Z one of hip hops biggest and best stars IN THE WORLD. He then said, "Do you wanna know what my white neighbor's job is?... Hes a *beep* DENTIST... He aint the best dentist; he aint the biggest Dentist in the nation, just a regular yank yo tooth out dentist. Do you know what a black dentist would have to do to live in my neighborhood?? He'd have to invent Teeth" So Ive always thought dentists were paid.

Also, Sometimes I read the bottom of posts and dont realize they're a Signature... Do you?

"barely" over 100,000...... ummmm that equals upper middle class.........which is by definition 100,000.... pullin in that much is enough to be considered "wealthy"..or rather "flush"

reply

Sorry, but we live in the Bay Area in CA and my husband makes about $135k a year and that is no where near "wealthy" or "flush". Considering that house prices in our town are over $600k for a basic 3/2 tract home, it is is by no means well off.

I wish I made that much AND I LIVE IN SAN FRANCISCO...

The father's family had money. This is discussed at more than one point in the film.

reply

Perhaps the money was the moms. Or perhaps the mother or father were from a wealthy family.

We gotta travel by day so..lets go
