sharedoes anyone know the breed of the dog that David Duchovny's character owns in the movie??
sharebhogan,
Not sure what breed the dog is but I am sure he is the same dog that was in the Michael Douglas film, "Wonder Boys".
Might be a mixed breed, looks sort of pit bull/mastiff mix.
I've been searching for this answer for a few hours now...I finally found your answer - it is an American Bull Dog.
This is where I found it: http://www.citizenlunchbox.com/famous/dogs-M-R.html page down until you find Mel...
I've seen some pics of the American Bulldog that DID NOT look like Mel...I guess there are different looks to these dogs, though, because the following site has some pics that DO look like him...

Enjoy!
He is a boxer. Not a bull dog like some are saying. Look it up, you'll see.
shareHe's a staffordshire terrier. Boxers have a very different look to them.
Schell's...the best darn beer this side of the Mississippi!
I know this is a bit late, but the dog "Mel" is definately an American Bulldog, I know his trainers...
shareHi Guys,
"Mel" is an American Bulldog. There are two different kinds, one is a Scott or standard type-longer muzzle, more athletic looking and that is what "Mel" is. The other type is called a Johnson. Bigger, undershot jaw and looks like a big beefy white boxer. I know this, because I own both types, and this movie is one of my all time favorites!! American Bulldogs are getting more and more popular in films because they are super smart and their color shows up better in films.
Another American Bulldog is in the more updated version of The Incredible Journey. Michael J. fox does his voice over.
Alene :)
Actually, I think the name of the movie where Michael J. Fox provided the voice for the dog, Chance, was Homeward Bound (which was a remake of The Incredible Journey), with Don Ameche doing the older dog and Sally Field doing the Himalayan cat.
shareThe Incredible Journey was part of the title. All together: Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey.
"Ah. Multiple exclamation points, the true sign of a deranged mind."
American Bulldogs seem to be a favorite in Bonnie Hunt movies. The dog in Cheaper by the Dozen is also an American Bulldog. I own a 10-month old Johnson type and am from Georgia (where the Johnson breed was started). They are the most loyal, intelligent and beautiful dogs, ever!
shareMel looks like he may be mixed a bit with a great dane though, doesn't he?
He actually is quite tall in the legs to be all AB. They are a little stockier. Great Dane is a possibility, or perhaps even Greyhound because of the narrow hips.
sharei had a dog like this and it is an american staffordshire terrier AKA pitbull
shareamerican statffordshire terriers and pitbulls are two very different breeds. a pitbull is about twice as high as a staffordshire at the withers. so get your breeds straight.
I am tempted to give a hostile reply for your remark, but I won't. Maybe I do have my breeds mixed up.. I am not afraid to admit when I am wrong. All I know is that the dog I had was considered both an American Staffordshire Terrier and a Pitbull and that by being this breed it caused problems when searching for home insurance. But AST's are considered pitbulls( by the AKC and the UKC) but not all pitbulls are considered ASTs.. pitbull is basically a nickname for American Pit Bull Terrier and it was even one for bull dogs back in the early 1800s.
So the next time you want to be sarcastic with someone do a little research yourself
Anyway, i came across this website speaking on the subject...

The breed is a mix, but it's the same dog used in the Homeward Bound Movies.
