I consider this the best film of all time. I'm intreasted in discussing any flaws anyone can have. I count only one besides the normal number of mistakes all films make. The camera shot of Grace entering the bar from her room seem out of place from the other scenes. Agree or disagree?
i get the idea of a shy person but i wanted to see some chemistry...it seemed when she was in italy she was doing better sitting there then before bob came. it wasnt enough...just a bit more chemistry
Wow, I really thought this was a bad movie. But, I did see it on television, so it had been cut, I'm sure. When it came out in theatres, I was interested, but I'm very glad I didn't pay $8 to see it!
I had several issues with the picture. Mainly, though I love David Duchovny AND Minnie Driver, they had absolutely ZERO chemistry. I just didn't buy their attraction. I realize they were supposed to be sad people, but sad doesn't have to be dull.
I just never really saw the relationship develop, either. I didn't understand what was pulling them together-- even fate has to be romantic, and they weren't. There were no amazing moments between them. Unless the version I saw was missing a TON of scenes. I hope it wasn't though, it was nearly 3 hours on TV.
Not the best film ever...by far...and I also don't think there was enough chemistry between Duchovny's & Driver's characters, but the old guys were a hoot! LOL And I LIKED the movie...the best scene was Duchovny's character crying so hard inside his door. And I liked the dog. But I like David Duchovny! :) In fact, I OWN the movie & plan to keep it. At least I think I still own it! LOL Gotta check my collection. Opinions are subjective...some people loved the movie; some hated it, & others are in-between. That's life!

It was a great film... but it really has meaning if you have lived through a life and death health crisis. To under stand the film one needs to understand Bonnie Hunt, director and co-writer. She her self was a nurse, a cancer nurse, her brother is a doctor and infact helped her get permission to use a hospital. She has seen no doubt medical triumph and sorrow. I have taken chemo for colon cancer, so for me the issues of loss and love and the hope of renewed love ring home, and the movie has deep meaning for those of us who have fought for life and won. Carroll O'Connor is great and you forget that he is Carroll O'Connor, His believable. All of the Characters in this movie in their private lives hanve given money to various medical causes, so it is understandable that when they read the scripts, they wanted to do the movie.
I'm glad the chemistry wasn't more pronounced - it would have been entirely out of place with the entire film! You couldn't see Bob being knocked off his feet by some random gorgeous babe because of mere sexual attraction after the love of his life had already been killed suddenly and his world has fallen apart. It was simply that he noticed Grace - was struck by her and he found somebody he could share his life with again. It was very true to life for such an unbelievable story - you were actually taken along the journey and felt each bump (I cry and laugh more each time I see it).
Whilst 'best film ever' might seem to flatter, and I don't personally agree with that statement, I think the film is perfect to the point where, having watched it a number of times, I wouldn't change one aspect of it. Bonnie Hunt deserves a lot of credit for this little bit of magic.
While I don't know about your proclaimation, I'd probably vote a 9 or 10/10 for it.
I think that had this been a Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan movie - or cast with players of that ilk - everybody would be talking about it that much more, and its rating here would probably be a full point higher.
Not that there was anything wrong with Duchovny and Driver in the roles - in fact, I thought that they were perfectly cast, especially considering the wry dry humor that laces so many of their lines. Somebody here said they didn't have a lot of chemistry, but they were playing shy, introspective, and basically *average* people.
It's SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE good, which means it should make a lot of Top 10 Date Movie lists. It's funny, sweet, and very very watchable (and rewatchable). Bonnie Hunt hit just about every right note - I wish she directed more.
The scene where Bob (Duchovny) comes home after the accident is just wrenching. Movies don't get more powerful than that, especially in this genre generally devoted to pure fluff.
10/10 all the way!! I can't count the number of times I've watched it. It keeps getting better and better. The soundtrack is fabulous.
One of the best scenes in the movie (IMHO) is where Duchovny is tellin Grier about the situation...at the same time Driver is telling the Italian waiter...WOW...MAMA MIA!
And the whole Irish Italian restaurant thing...ESPECIALLY with Carroll O'Connor.
Another movie that can be watched over and over and something new happens with each viewing. Ryan and Hanks in Return To Me?? Nah... Impossible.
Minnie fit perfect along with David. Who else could pull off the swiss water line except Minnie.
When she goes upstairs and finds what she finds on his dresser that kills me every time I watch it. Just her facial expression alone in that scene is worth the whole movie.
Also when she comes downstairs with her cap on and sees David standing there. Her eyes go so WIDE with embarrassment. So many great scenes that never ever get old or boring.
The nun/bicycle scene is so precious.

Just caught it on tv and it's not the best movie ever by a long shot watch the departed or blood diamond there better than this. I like the movie so i'm no hater and i'll probably buy the dvd and watch it again but it's not nearly the best film ever.
Maybe it should have been titled the best romantic comedy movie ever. It's right up there for me, having watched it over and over. The whole movie is just perfect for me!
I love this film, it's got so much charm & there's great chemistry between Minnie & David Duchovny, but it certainly isn't the greatest film ever made!!
"Why? I'll tell you why. Because a fruit cart, A STINKING FRUIT CART, killed my pa!"
I would not say best film ever, because I would base that on some other elements that this film does not have, but when it comes to the romantic comedy genre, this is definitely my favorite. What sets it apart for me is all the little details. I love the chemistry between the two stars--it strikes just the right note for the situation in the film: it is real, it is believeable. They are two people who have endured some very heartwrenching situations and find that in each other they have a second chance at life that neither really ever expected. I give this film a 10 out of 10 and, after having watched over 6000 films myself, this one ranks number 10 on my all-time favorite 150 films list.
